What To Know

  • The cast of CBS’s upcoming vampire comedy Eternally Yours is opening up about the romances at the heart of the show.
  • See what else they’re teasing from San Diego Comic-Con.

Ghosts fans may have to wait until the midseason to pick back up with regular episodes of the CBS comedy, but the fall void will be filled by new series Eternally Yours, from the same creators, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman.

The show introduces a vampire family that is thrown for a loop when daughter Emma (Helen J. Shen) brings human boyfriend Max (Jaren Lewison) home to her parents, Liz (Allegra Edwards) and Charles (Ed Weeks), who have been stuck in a 500-year now-loveless marriage. Also cohabitating in their Seattle-based abode are Emma’s uncle Jesse (Parker Young) and his human wife, Phyllis (Rose Abdoo), and their twin sons.

“I think it’s in that same tonal world of sort of mythology mixed with human warmth and some really heartwarming moments,” Weeks shares with TV Insider at San Diego Comic Con, adding it’s “very relatable” and “has the Joe Port and Joe Wiseman magic.”

While Eternally Yours is, at its heart, a family comedy, romance is certainly a central figure as Helen and Max are just sparking theirs and are surrounded by two very different examples that could influence their relationship. “It’s about putting that vampire mythology into an everyday domestic setting and what would it be like to be married to the same person for 500 years,” Weeks explains.

Young echoes this sentiment, adding, “We’re really exploring relationships. We’re looking at a relationship that’s never-ending… It’s loveless and full of bickering, and then my relationship is the opposite of that. I’m married to a human, and, as a result, it’s temporary and has its own challenges and joys, and then there’s another relationship [between Emma and Max], these two adorable, lovely people.”

While Jesse and Phyllis’ marriage is quite different from Charles and Liz, Edwards highlights the positives of that contrast, saying, “It’s a great foil to the relationship between Charles and Liz because we have no physical life in the bedroom,” amending by saying it’s a “once a year” deal.

Despite her vampire status, Emma is eager to find her perfect match, proving the dating pool is a challenge for everyone, even the undead.

“It’s been interesting to think about eternity and [dating]… It’s already impossible because [Emma’s been] doing it for 200 years, and then to meet somebody and then be thrust into this idea of, ‘I don’t wanna be like my parents, but maybe there’s parts of it that I do want,'” Shen says.

Likewise, there’s plenty to look forward to for human Max and his connection with Emma, as Lewison notes, “I think that Emma is someone that he is really excited about. I think that he hasn’t quite found his person yet, and, obviously, it’s early days for them… but there’s a lot of intrigue and excitement and a lot to learn about each other and their relationship as it progresses.”

So while you may be missing the haunts at Woodstone, Eternally Yours is keeping supernatural comedy fans on their toes and in their feelings with these various romances. Stay tuned for more on the forthcoming series and let us know what you hope to see from the new title.
