‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Begins Production on Season 23 — But Who’s Missing?
What To Know
- ABC has shared the first set photo from Grey’s Anatomy Season 23.
- Fans will notice one major face that’s missing from the line-up, and two other surprises as well.
Grey’s Anatomy is officially back in action, as most of the cast of the series has returned to its set to begin production on Season 23.
ABC shared a set photo of the stars of the long-lived medical drama, including Chris Carmack (who plays Atticus “Link” Lincoln), Jen Landon (newcomer Toni Wright), James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber), Debbie Allen (Catherine Fox), Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Niko Terho (Lucas Adams), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd), Trevor Jackson (Wes Bryant), Adelaide Kane (Jules Millin), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Harry Shum Jr. (Benson “Blue” Kwan), Alexis Floyd (Simone Griffith), Anthony Hill (Winston Ndugu), and Jason George (Ben Warren).
That’s almost all of the principals of the series, except for Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), of course. Since Season 19 in 2022, Pompeo has been just a part-time member of the cast, despite being its foundational star.
Meredith appeared in a major arc in last season’s finale, where she got engaged to Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) after his near-fatal injuries in the bridge collapse. The two live in Boston in the story, though, so perhaps she merely isn’t present for the Season 23 premiere events.

Judging from the line-up of the photo, we can deduce that Toni Wright will indeed be back after that cliffhanger Season 22 finale ending, to (possibly) sort things out with Amelia. Plus, it looks like Kwan isn’t gone for good, after all, despite being forcefully fired by Richard Webber in the finale for unlawfully giving a patient experimental treatment against FDA orders. How they both come back into the fold remains to be seen, of course.
Grey’s Anatomy is expected to return to ABC this fall for its usual Thursday night slate, and though some have started to question how much longer the show might run, the network has also given the green light to a new Texas-set spinoff for the midseason in 2027.
Grey’s Anatomy, Season 23, Fall Premiere Date TBA, ABC
