What To Know

  • The contents of the ransom note sent one day after Nancy Guthrie was abducted have been revealed.
  • The letter was addressed directly to Nancy’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, and contained several threats.

The very first ransom note sent about Nancy Guthrie was addressed to Savannah Guthrie, and the contents of the message have now been revealed. Briana Whitney, a true crime junkie, read part of the letter when she appeared on the Crime Junkie podcast with Ashley Flowers.

“Hello Savannah, we have your mother Nancy,” the note began. “She is safe, but scared. She will be held for ransom and once she is received she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days.”

Briana explained that the first ransom letter, sent just one day after Nancy was reported missing, went on to “demand” millions of dollars with two deadlines. “What is key here, I think, is the money was demanded in USD, that’s U.S. dollars. Typically, if you’re from here, you don’t say that,” Briana pointed out.

She then revealed that the letter got “pretty demanding and snarky,” while also noting the importance of it only addressing Savannah, who is high-profile, as opposed to the entire Guthrie family.

The note continued, “Once payment is received at the Bitcoin address below, she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe dropoff location back in Tucson. If the payment is not retrieved by the last deadline on Monday the 9th by 5 p.m., she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out. There will be no negotiations. Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you.”

Officials previously revealed during a February press conference that the first ransom note ended with something only the abductor would know. Briana disclosed that information, which was that Nancy had a white smart watch on the floor near her bed, and that there was a floodlight destroyed in the backyard.

“Those two clues are what gave the FBI the wherewithal to say, ‘This is not a hoax,’ and that they were investigating this as possibly legitimate. They still are.”

A subsequent ransom note, sent months later, claimed that Nancy was dead. None of the letters have been officially declared legitimate, and one man in California was even arrested for faking a ransom note about the case.

They need to give these kinds of stories a rest. It says absolutely nothing new

  2. G

    Gee

The FBI should have been in charge from from the start!!!! The sheriff's dept should be ashamed! No one really started looking for a few days.

I think they wasted a lot of time and have solved nothing.

I don't believe Nancy is alive. I think she passed shortly after being taken due to not having her medication. That's why there was never further demand for ransom. I just hope her body is found so her family can have closure.

I agree, with all the advanced technology, there is no reason this poor 80 something year old mother and grandmother should not have been found!!!

I think if they have her still I hope she's being fed from what I understand she was on meds so take all that back she probably isn't alive. I hate saying that I want to feel hope, I just think of it were my 97 year old mother I'll be at the end of this Earth doing anything.

I get you want to be hopeful, we all do really, but realistically, she’s most likely gone by now. I think she most likely passed soon after they took her because they underestimated just how fragile she, her heart & other health issues really were. They didn’t intend for her to die, at least not as soon as she did and not by other circumstances.

The FBI Sheriffs debt and metro police were all playing who has jurisdiction and let so much time and evidence go.Next time hire a bounty hunter because I am sickened .

Is Tucson really that out dated with there city safety and surveillance they got no images of anything other than the doorbell cam. That's crazy to me. They found no d.n.a of the intruder? Because the intruders d.n.a would already be there cause he's not a stranger. It's someone she knows loves and trusts.

Yeah, it makes absolutely no sense to me that nobody else has seemingly caught anything, like a car going in & out of the neighborhood around the time she was taken, on some type of camera system. There’s only one or two ways into that neighborhood, if I recall, and there are businesses and stuff outside of those streets as well, so it’s hard for me to believe that out of all those nice houses & businesses, none of them managed to capture anything else that could help with the case. Surely, the perpetrator(s) had been to the home to at least scope the place out before doing it what they did as they seemed to know right where everything else was located . Maybe they did find more than what they’re saying for now, but it just seems unlikely at this point that that is the case.

Tucson sheriff department police department FBI really bought this up if they had this note pay the $2 million that's a drop in the bucket to Guthrie. The kid should be ashamed of themselves and other had poor Security could've had a necklace on depressive button if an emergency happened what did debacle?

I think that Sherrif made a terrible mistake by not calling in the FBI right away. They are familiar with these type of kidnappings. Even if the Sherrif thought it a hoax, it should have been investigated. I wish she were alive and the kidnappers would give Savanna another chance. She only did In sure what the Sherrif advised her to do. These people who are to proud to ask for help, shouldn't be in charge.

This tugs on my heart every day. I can't even imagine what Ms. Nancy went through, not to mention the entire Guthrie family. I still can't believe they could not pull more data from the ring doorbell. If they found the one picture, why couldn't they find more? Not to mention, why is it taking so long to pinpoint someone from the blood that was retrieved? I pray every day there is news that Ms. Nancy is found and alive, but the odds of that are slim. Why isn't this in the news more, put pressure or the criminals, not to mention the law to find her! God bless you Nancy and the Guthrie family!

Why is the grossly incompetent sherrif still there. His resume was full of lies. He neglected to tell he was let go from his previous job although a mystery why they did not perform a full background check.

  16. F

    Fanchero

This is sad . A daughter who has the money but doesn't pay that's ???? Questionable . And the motivation for the kidnapping directed to Savannah ,I think she got info/dirt on someone and they didn't want it released she is after all a news reporter so they did this not actually for the money but for her to see how easy they can and will take something you love.

  17. P

    Patriciajaneset

I think its some in the family even though they say all of the families been cleared. Or maybe someone who knew the family. Poor woman..and why is it taking so long to find her. You are not even safe in your own home. Prayers for her and her family.

    1. S

      Shecall

It is NOT someone in the family!! They ALL have been cleared. Thats a terrible thing to say about a family who is going through such a terrible time!! This was a kidnapping gone wrong because of who Savannah Guthrie is, plain and simple!! 🤦🏼‍♀️
