What To Know

  • A woman was physically and sexually assaulted after a male suspected entered her home in Tucson, Arizona, on July 21.
  • The incident took place just 30 miles from where Nancy Guthrie was on January 31.
  • Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed whether he believes the cases to be related.

A violent home invasion just 30 miles from Nancy Guthrie‘s home in Tucson, Arizona, has left nearby citizens on edge. The incident took place on July 21 at about 2:40 in the morning, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (the same police department investigating Guthrie’s abduction.)

“An unknown male suspect entered the residence through an unlocked door, physically and sexually assaulted the female victim, and prior to fleeing the scene, attempted to burglarize the home.”

However, Chris Nanos, the sheriff in Pima County, told Fox News Digital that nothing indicates the cases are related. No suspect has been arrested in the latest attack, while Guthrie’s kidnapper also remains at large. The mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie has been missing since January 31.

The suspect in the latest assault was described as Hispanic or white, standing about 5’10” “with a thin build,” per Fox News. “He has gray in his beard and was last seen wearing an oversized shirt.”

Officials previously released surveillance footage from Guthrie’s doorbell camera before it was disabled, and the unidentified person in the video is estimated to be 5’9″ or 5’10” tall.

Guthrie’s family is desperate for answers and closure. “It i s five months of agony and unending trauma for our family,” Savannah recently told KOLD. “There is not a moment that goes by that we aren’t actively trying to find out mom. We thank the people of Tucson for holding her in their hearts, as well as both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office for their tireless work on behalf of our family. Bring her home.”

The local department has been working with the FBI to solve the case. A June statement from the FBI office in Phoenix noted, “The FBI and its task force partners have received several ransom notes over the course of this investigation. Some have been deemed to be extortion attempts without legitimacy. Other ransom demands may potentially be legitimate and are still being investigated as such. This case continues to be investigated as a kidnapping for ransom case. The FBI has and will continue to offer all assistance possible in the investigation — however, local authorities remain the lead.”
