What To Know

  • Joe Scarborough criticized the rise of “extraordinarily loony ideas” within the Democratic Party.
  • Scarborough and Ed Luce discussed how these do not resonate with working-class or mainstream voters.
  • The MS NOW anchor noted that centrist candidates like Joe Biden prove that they are more likely to win broader support.

Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough spoke with MS NOW contributor Ed Luce on Monday (July 20) about the rise of Democratic Socialism within the Democratic Party and his concerns about it.

Scarborough began the discussion by reading a quote from Luce’s recent Financial Times column, which noted popular socialist policies such as universal healthcare and higher taxes on the rich, while also saying the party comes across as “anti-American.” Luce also stated that it has given President Trump ammunition by invoking communism.

“I get all of that,” Scarborough said, per Mediaite. “I mean, there have been some extraordinarily loony ideas coming from some. Some of these people have actually won races and are going to be seated in Congress, most likely. Like, you know, getting rid of prisons, getting rid of cops, that didn’t work well for Democrats before, didn’t work well for American cities, either.”

The MS NOW anchor claimed that “America is getting safer again, in good part because both parties have come to the conclusion that police officers are a good thing. [They] make our communities safer, make our children safer, make our schools safer.”

“That said, they are extremes,” he continued. “And I guess my question is why the Democratic Party is so ill-equipped to deal with those extremes, brush them off, and instead focus on candidates that are mainstream who are going to end up winning most of these primaries, and who are most likely going to take over the House and Senate?”

Luce pointed out that a reason the Democratic Socialists of America are doing so well is that the Democratic Party has failed to tap into a rising anti-establishment energy. That said, Luce noted that the DSA is winning in heavily blue areas with highly educated voters, and he doesn’t believe they’d have similar success in working-class districts.

“You’ve got this sort of Berkeley-Jacobin Magazine approach that is going to boomerang in their faces,” he added. “The working class, the blue collars we’re talking about, the African Americans in South Carolina, none of this really speaks to them.”

Scarborough said it reminds him of the start of the 2020 presidential campaign, “where everybody was darting as far left as they could, Joe Biden stayed in the center, Joe Biden won.”
