Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly felt a bit left during the Tuesday, July 7, episode of Today.
At the top of the episode’s “PopStart” segment, Daly realized that all of the hosts except himself and Guthrie were wearing yellow outfits. “Savannah and I didn’t get the yellow memo today. You guys all coordinated,” he quipped. Guthrie, for her part, jokingly called Craig Melvin “diplomatic” for matching all the hosts’ looks with a yellow-and-blue-striped tie.
By the end of the segment, however, Guthrie was eager to change things up, especially after noticing that lifestyle and commerce contributor Jill Martin was also sporting yellow. “You guys, did you really have a memo?” she questioned before declaring that she was going to change into a yellow outfit.
After a commercial break, the Today hosts greeted fans on the 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Sticking to her promise, Guthrie used the break to quickly swap her blue dress for a yellow one. “I love that you just found this yellow dress,” Dylan Dreyer noted, to which Guthrie added, “I did, girls. I wanted to be with my ladies.”

Sheinelle Jones assured viewers that the cast’s matching looks were “not planned,” while Melvin offered to lend one of his yellow ties to Daly. “Carson, do you feel left out?” Jenna Bush Hager asked. Daly replied, “Not really.”
Daly eventually caved in and changed his shirt and tie during the next commercial break. “I’m sorry, did you change into a yellow tie? Now that is impressive,” Guthrie commended. When asked by Dreyer if the quick change was “worth the scramble,” Daly said, “Yeah, I think so.”
Guthrie wrapped up the outfit discussion by stating that the hosts should try to “coordinate more often.”
Earlier in the episode, Guthrie noted that yellow was her favorite color. The color holds a sentimental meaning to her, as fans have used yellow flowers and ribbons to support Savannah’s family amid the ongoing investigation into her mother Nancy Guthrie‘s disappearance.
Nancy was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1. Authorities have yet to name any suspects in the case, and recent reports about one of the ransom notes sent to news outlets suggest Nancy died a few days after her alleged abduction.

Former Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb returned to the show as Savannah took time off during the initial investigation. At the time, Kotb and the Today hosts showed their support on air by sporting yellow ribbon pins and decorating Studio 1A with bouquets of yellow flowers.
“So many people [are] placing yellow flowers near Nancy’s home and all across the city. And we got a suggestion from one of our viewers, and we’re doing the same here,” Kotb explained on the show’s February 18 episode. “We have yellow roses around studio 1A, and we are all wearing ribbons as we send our love to Savannah and her family.” (Savannah returned to Today on April 6.)
