2026 became the year of fear, as horror films, particularly those built around bold, original concepts, emerged as some of the biggest breakout hits at the box office. Movies like Obsession, Send Help, and Iron Lung all made a major impact on both audiences and the industry. Yet among the year’s wave of inventive horror, A24’s Backrooms stood apart, transforming one of the internet’s most unsettling urban legends into one of the year’s most anticipated films.

Since its release, Backrooms has grossed roughly $350 million worldwide, not only becoming A24’s highest-grossing film of all time. but making history for its 21-year-old director, Kane Parsons, who became the youngest director ever to helm a movie that reached No. 1 at the worldwide box office.

For those who missed the box-office phenomenon while it was in theaters, here is how you can watch Backrooms in the comfort of your own home.

Where can you watch Backrooms?

The film was available to rent or purchase on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and most digital retailers on Tuesday, July 14. But as of September 25, Backrooms will be available to stream on HBO Max and will make its linear debut on September 26 at 8/7c.

Additionally, the original viral web series that inspired the movie is available for free on the Kane Pixels YouTube Channel.

What is Backrooms about?

Directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms follows Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a furniture store owner coping with divorce and alcoholism. After discovering a portal to the endless, liminal-space dimension in the basement, he descends into madness, prompting his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), to save him.

Based on the internet phenomenon of liminal spaces, Backrooms began as a series of short films set within an endless, empty maze of sterile spaces. The concept revolves around “liminal spaces,” which merge a sense of familiarity with the foreboding that arises when usually bustling spaces like schools, offices, or shopping malls are devoid of people. Then add in monsters and anomalies for good fun.

Originating as a 4chan post and then a YouTube series, it has since evolved into a viral analog-horror universe, thus becoming a psychological horror film distributed by A24.

Who is Kane Pixels?

Kane Pixels was the online pseudonym of director Kane Parsons. He was only 16 years old when he created his first viral Backrooms video on YouTube in January 2022 using Blender and Adobe After Effects. Due to the popularity of the creepy shorts, he would eventually become the youngest director to ever debut a movie at A24.

“It’s been really, really great, obviously. What I’m used to online has been doing everything so low, so this has been my one and only really first foray into a broader collaborative experience like this. And in a lot of ways, it feels sort of like a weird dream come true, where there’s really not been many barriers to creative control along the way,” Parsons told Deadline.
