‘Cape Fear’ Exclusive First Look: Anna & Tom Pay Max an Uncomfortable Visit (VIDEO)

Javier Bardem in "Cape Fear," now streaming on Apple TV.

Things are not looking good for the Bowdens. Ever since Max Cady (Javier Bardem) was released from prison after serving 17 years for a murder he insists he did not commit, life has become increasingly unhinged. And by Cape Fear Episode 6, the family is in a full-blown tailspin as Cady continues to gain ground.

In this exclusive first look at Episode 6, “Possum,” Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom (Patrick Wilson) head to Max’s new home, which just so happens to be directly across the street, to “welcome him to the neighborhood” the only way they know how: by laying down a few ground rules. But when they arrive, they discover Max already has a guest — one they know all too well. It’s Peanut Butter, their pet cat.

After Max pet-shames them for their care and abhorrent pet-naming skills, he introduces them to his other, more human guest, who also spent the night…

Prior to this discovery, it appears as though the Bowdens are spiraling. In Episode 5, “Faith,” viewers get a disturbing glimpse into hellraiser Nevaeh’s (Malia Pyles) home life as she terrorizes her mother (Martha Millan), suggesting Max has influenced his daughter’s behavior. Hoping to keep Nevaeh far away from her family, Anna tracks her down outside a movie theater and confronts her. The encounter turns physical and, of course, is caught on camera and blasted across the internet for everyone to gawk at.

Meanwhile, Tom’s personal and professional life begins to unravel, thanks to his inappropriate relationship with his coworker and a possible AI manipulation. Zack’s (Joe Anders) increasingly disturbing behavior only heightens the tension at home as Max’s relentless games continue to destabilize the entire family. By the end of the hour, both Anna and Tom have been suspended from their jobs, and Max makes his move on the family by moving into the house directly across the street, setting the stage for an even more personal confrontation.

Everything isn’t all kittens and party girls for Max, though. Juliette Lewis continues to pop up as Cady’s pixie dream girl, speaking in cryptic riddles and driving him to the edge. The two clearly share a troubled history, but the series is still keeping the details under wraps.

So, what new surprises are in store for the Bowdens this week?
