Mira Sorvino Celebrates First Day of ‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel Production

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow have begun filming the long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Several original cast members, including Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell, will reprise their roles.
The untitled sequel will be directed by Tim Federle, written by original screenwriter Robin Schiff.

It’s a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion reunion! Twenty-nine years after the first Romy and Michele film hit theaters, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are busy filming the comedy’s sequel. And Sorvino tearfully marked day one of production on Instagram.

“OK, I just want to document the fact that we finished the first day of Romy and Michele 2, and ‘one day’ has become ‘day one,’” Sorvino said in a reel, accompanied by a music-box version of “When You Wish Upon a Star” in the background. “After 30 years, we have a sequel. And, like, this is the biggest dream project ever, and I couldn’t be more excited.”

In the caption to the reel, Sorvino wrote, “Thoughts from our first day on the sequel to #romyandmichel. I am so full of gratitude, my [heart] could burst!”

In the comments, fellow actors shared their enthusiasm for the project, too.

“I love [you] and [am] so excited,” said Harvey Guillen.

“I can’t wait to see this!” Wendi McLendon-Covey exclaimed in all caps.

“I’m so happy for you, Mira,” added Cheri Oteri.

“I can’t wait!” raved Hilarie Burton.

Production on the yet-untitled sequel kicked off earlier this month, according to Deadline. Sorvino, 58, and Kudrow, 62, are once again playing Romy and Michele, women who posed as the inventors of Post-its to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion in the original film.

Alan Cumming (Sandy Frink), Janeane Garofalo (Heather), Camryn Manheim (Toby), and Julia Campbell (Christie) will also reprise their roles from the 1997 release. New costars filling undisclosed roles include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham.

Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) is directing the film, while Robin Schiff, who wrote the original Romy and Michele film, has provided the script. And costume designer Mona May is back to provide the wardrobe, having vowed in a statement to “keep the DNA of the characters and design the fashions to be as fun and fabulous as the original film.”

The 20th Century Studios film will stream as a Hulu Original on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers domestically, and it will stream on Disney+ internationally, according to Deadline.
