Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are reuniting for a new comedy film 40 years after the 1986 cult classic was released.
During a June 11 interview on Today, Broderick, 64, and Ruck, 69, dished on their upcoming project and reflected on the 40th anniversary of the beloved teen comedy.
When asked if it felt like that much time had passed since Ferris Bueller, Ruck admitted, “It’s just, it’s mind-boggling, really,” to which Broderick agreed, “Yeah, it’s a long time.”
In the film, Broderick played the titular character, who decided to take his infamous day off from school alongside his hypochondriac best friend, Cameron Frye, and girlfriend, Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara). They had a legendary time in the Windy City — including crashing a fancy restaurant, attending a Cubs game, joining the Von Steuben Day parade, and driving a Ferrari backward through a glass garage.
The dynamic duo is now working on a comedy film titled The Best Is Yet to Come. In it, Ruck and Broderick play longtime friends who embark on a bucket list adventure after a misunderstanding leads them to believe the other is terminally ill; the movie is based on the French film of the same name.
“It was great, I thought. And, like, no time had passed,” Broderick said of working with Ruck again four decades later. “He was great; I love working with him. He’s fun to talk to between, but you’re also good when you’re reading scripted dialogue.”
Additionally, Ruck addressed the possibility of a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off sequel.
“My joke always was, when people said, ‘Will there be a sequel?’ I said, ‘We’re going to wait until our 70s and Cameron’s in a home, and then Ferris comes and liberates him… And we go and do a bunch of nasty stuff, and then Cameron dies.”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was created, written, and directed by John Hughes. In addition to Broderick, Ruck, and Sara, it starred Jeffrey Jones, Jennifer Grey, Cindy Pickett, Lyman Ward, Edie McClurg, Charlie Sheen, and Ben Stein, among others.
