Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is set to land on Netflix on June 25, and with it comes the next chapter of Aang’s (Gordon Cormier) journey as Team Avatar ventures deeper into the Earth Kingdom, faces new threats, and prepares for the challenges that lie ahead in the war against the Fire Nation.

With the arrival of Season 2 comes the debut of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters: Toph Beifong (Miyako). The fan-favorite earthbending prodigy will officially join Team Avatar as Aang continues his journey toward mastering the elements and taking on the Fire Nation. For fans of the original Nickelodeon toon, Toph’s arrival marks one of the most anticipated milestones in the live-action adaptation, but for newbies who only know Aang through his live-action adventures, Toph might be a bit of a mystery.

So, here is everything you need to know about Toph Beifong, the latest beloved character from the animated series to leap to live action.

Who is Toph on Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Toph Beifong is a legendary earthbending master in the Avatar universe. Introduced in Book 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, she has been blind since birth. Toph was born to wealthy, overprotective parents who did their best to shelter their daughter, but her spirit could not be contained.

Fiercely independent and deeply sarcastic, Toph is an unyielding ally in the war against the Fire Nation. She becomes Aang’s earthbending teacher after King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) tells Aang that his teacher will be a master of Neutral Jing.

“For Aang, Toph is like a real mean older sister, but younger and stronger,” said Cormier.

“She has little to no filter, which means that she’s very blunt and funny,” said Miyako.

Executive producers Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan consider Toph one of their favorite characters from the animated series. “We love how her abrasively hilarious energy complements and clashes with the rest of the Gaang and can’t wait to see that dynamic come to life on set. She’s funny, she’s very smart about the world around her, and a very accomplished earthbender. Underneath all that, she’s got emotional layers we can’t wait to explore.”

Who plays Toph, and what did it take to bring her to life?

Toph is played by Miyako, who impressed the producers with her confidence, physicality, and ability to capture Toph’s trademark mix of toughness and humor. “The character of Toph is blind, and it was amazing to watch Miya approach that role with such discipline and commitment,” said exec producer Ryan Halprine.

“Learning how to portray a fully blind character was one of the biggest insecurities I had about this role,” said Miyako.

“Miya spent so much time working with our amazing blindness consultant, Joe Strechay, so she could get those senses right. Every time Toph is on set, Joe is on set. Every time Toph is in rehearsal, Joe is in rehearsal. We could not do this without him. He’s brilliant,” said exec producer Boylan.

“We worked together on how she touches things and moves through the world, thinking about the realities of blindness,” explained blindness consultant Joe Strechay. “But also, when Toph is bending, it’s evident that she doesn’t have to look at what she’s doing. It’s kind of like playing basketball and doing a no-look pass.”

According to producers, the special contacts worn by Miyako significantly limited her vision, meaning she had to learn all of her fight choreography while unable to fully see what was happening around her.

What do fans think of Toph’s casting?

So far, fans of ATLA have loved Miyako’s casting as Toph. “She even sounds a little like Toph, and captures her essence pretty well— I think she’ll do great,” wrote a fan on YouTube. “She has Toph’s voice and personality. W for Netflix on this casting,” posted another.

“I’m already convinced that out of the entire cast she is embodying the OG Toph the most,” wrote one commenter, while another joked, “I can’t believe they cast Toph to play Toph… incredible.” One fan wrote, “Hearing about the consultant being on set every time Toph was on set actually got me pretty emotional. That’s some incredible commitment on behalf of everyone involved. I was nervous about the length of time it was taking between seasons, but now I’m just super stoked again! IMO, A+ casting, A+ showrunning choices, and A+ wardrobe! Just… A+ all around. Looks SICK!”

On X, a poster wrote: “When the actor is an actual fan of the character since childhood, the performance is always elite. Miyako is born to play Toph, Season 2 can’t come soon enough!”
