3rd Rock from the Sun, which premiered on NBC on January 9, 1996, updated a tried-and-true sitcom premise for the ’90s. Shows like Mork & Mindy, My Favorite Martian and ALF had milked laughs out of the idea of aliens visiting Earth and living alongside normal humans; on 3rd Rock, an alien crew posed as a human family of their own, navigating life in a small Ohio town while taking notes on Earth culture for their boss back on their home planet. Running for six seasons and 139 episodes, the show earned critical acclaim, multiple Emmy Awards and a lasting reputation as one of the sharpest comedies of the era.
