What To Know

  • The View cohost reiterated her skepticism that the DOJ will release Jeffrey Epstein files.
  • Despite bipartisan congressional action and Trump’s signature, Attorney General Pam Bondi’s announcement of a new investigation was what Sunny Hostin predicted.

The cohosts of The View reacted to the news that Donald Trump signed the discharge petition that was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate to force the Department of Justice to release the files associated with convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Instead of celebrating, though, the tone was a bit grim as they also reacted to Attorney General Pam Bondi’s revelation that DOJ would open a new investigation into the Epstein case, months after closing the matter, thereby potentially preventing the release of the files.

Sunny Hostin, for one, was completely convinced that Bondi’s announcement meant the Justice Department would be withholding the release of the files indefinitely and echoed the point she made earlier in the week about the subject. (She said on Wednesday’s show that Trump was “also calling for certain Democrats to be investigated by the Justice Department, and Pam Bondi has said that she will start the investigation — or has started the investigation — under the Department of Justice guidelines. If there is an open investigation, any documents related to that investigation cannot be released …  during the course of the investigation. And so if the House says, ‘Yes, let’s release the Epstein files,’ if the Senate agrees to do it, even if the president signs it, there’s an exception to that act.”)

First, Alyssa Farah Griffin, after reviewing the footage of Bondi’s presser, predicted Saturday Night Live would be spoofing it, especially the part where she said the word “information” five times in the space of a couple of sentences. Then, she explained why she is bullish on the idea of the files being released. “The public outcry here is so strong that it would be really hard to completely shield information,” she said. “It’s like the one thing uniting the country right now: justice for the victims, release all the files.”

Meanwhile, Sara Haines suggested that Trump should follow through on his statements that the files only include Democrats, saying, “If there were so many Democrats in here … let us see it. We’ll all get mad together, and you’ll be a hero.”

Haines also said that the passage of the measure shows more waning support for Trump in his party. “We watched the Epstein vote go 427 to 1 in the House, pass the Senate immediately. We watched the Senate refused to yield to Trump’s desire to blow up the filibuster. We also saw that he’s losing battles in the redistricting and gerrymandering in Texas, Indiana, and Kansas.”

“He’s going down,” Joy Behar said to interject.

Then, Hostin got the chance to state her point on the subject. “I hate to be the curmudgeon at the table, as I often have, but I’ve been saying this all week: The fact that Trump asked the attorney general, Pam Bondi, to open up investigations into Democrats means there’s an exception [to releasing the files]… There’s no question in my mind — I’m sorry, folks — that we are going to see the DOJ stall the release,” she said.

“He’d go down on that,” Behar insisted.

“This would be his undoing, if he decides to do that,” Haines agreed.
