For those who were already familiar with the case at hand in Murdaugh: Death in the Family, the events of the finale, which is now on Hulu, will not be too terribly surprising. The episode follows Alex Murdaugh (Jason Clarke) as he grapples with the fallout of his crimes, facing a trial for the murders of Paul (Johnny Berchtold) and Maggie (Patricia Arquette).
In the course of it, two key pieces of evidence come through: Paul’s phone is unlocked and reveals a Snapchat video was taken mere minutes before the murders with Alex at the scene of the crime; and data from Alex’s vehicle comes in at at the last minute, revealing that he slowed down right at the spot where Maggie’s phone was ultimately found.
Much of the focus of this episode is on Alex’s attempts to wriggle his way out of the “tangled web [he’s] weaved,” as he puts it on the stand, along with Buster’s (Will Harrison) reaction to all of the information piling up to point to his father’s guilt.
Perhaps the most poignant moment of the episode comes when Buster, visiting his father in jail, asks him why he didn’t ask him to come down on the night of June 7th alongside Paul and Maggie.
After he’s convicted of his crimes, Alex has to face the man in the mirror in his cell, and Buster gives the poem that’s been such a calling card for the family, away.
To break down the meaning of these moments and more in the finale, TV Insider caught up with the cast — including Jason Clarke, Patricia Arquette, Johnny Berchtold, and Will Harrison — as well as the creative team — including Michael D. Fuller, Erin Lee Carr, and Mandy Matney — in the video above!
