Extra was renewed for another season at Fox in March, and while it was initially unclear whether host Billy Bush would be returning, his future with the network was confirmed on May 5. He confirmed the news himself on his Hot Mics podcast.

“After an amazing five years hosting Extra, I’m moving on to continue building out my Hot Mics digital platform,” Bush shared. “We have experienced unprecedented growth in a short period of time here on this show and I find myself hungrier and more stimulated than at any point in my professional career. Extra is culturally iconic. If I had a dollar for every time someone hollered ‘Extra Extra’ to me in the airport or something, I’d buy Warner Bros.”

He continued, “It’s been a tremendous honor and privilege to front this show. We were there for each other at this pivotal time in 2019, I’m proud of it. It’s now time to build something of my own. I’m forever grateful to the amazing staff at Extra and the executives at Warner Bros. for this awesome chapter of my life. I mean every word of that. I have had a tremendous run.”

The entertainment news show, which has aired in syndication since 1994, is returning to Fox for Season 32 in fall 2025.

Before Bush confirmed his departure, sources told Deadline, “There has been speculation that he may be leaving after six seasons, but that has not been determined yet.” It was also noted that conversations with Bush about his future on the show are expected to start now that Extra has been renewed.

Bush has helmed the show since 2019 alongside a group of correspondents, including senior correspondent/weekend co-hosts Melvin Robert and Mona Kosar Abdi and correspondent Terri Seymour.

The nephew of former President George H. W. Bush and cousin of former President George W. Bush, the Extra host previously served as a correspondent on Access Hollywood from 2001 to 2004 before becoming the primary anchor, a position he held until 2016.

He left Access Hollywood to join as co-host in the third hour of the Today show; however, his stint there was short-lived. In October 2016, Bush became caught up in controversy when a 2005 Access Hollywood recording surfaced of him and then-presidential candidate Donald Trump having a lewd conversation about women. He was subsequently dropped from the Today show.

Bush joined Extra in 2019, when the show moved from NBC to Fox, replacing former host Mario Lopez, who left to join Bush’s former show Access Hollywood.

Extra is executive produced by Theresa Coffino and Jeremy Spiegel and produced by Telepictures Productions in association with Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, and is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

I'm happy if Billy Bush is happy. I think he was played dirty by NBC. He is a class act. I wanted/want him to replace Pat Sajak/Ryan Seacrest on Wheel of Fortune. He is sooo much more likeable than Ryan. Totally down to earth. Ryan doesn't "listen" to contestants. Billy does great interviews!

I use to tape extra every night but I just watched it tonight. It was not worth watching anymore. Not that I dislike Derek Hough but he is not the right fit. You are going to lose a lot of viewers 😢

Extra is a syndicated program distributed by Warner Bros. to Fox’s owned-and-operated stations as well as other local stations; it is not a network program, so it didn’t move from NBC to Fox in 2019, it moved from NBC’s local O&Os to Fox’s O&Os and Bush was hosting it under contract with Warner Bros.
