Elementary, “The Illustrious Client” (Thursday, Jan. 22, 10/9c, CBS)

The Elementary producers have been teasing a big story with Sherlock’s partner Kitty Winter (Ophelia Lovibond) for months, and tonight starts the two-part “event” that allows her to blossom into more than just Sherlock’s protégé.

There’s been something off-putting about Kitty since the beginning of her run. The series was always going to have to deal with a certain amount of fan pushback over the addition of Ms. Winter—the equivalent of a newborn sibling mucking up family dynamics. And despite the writers’ efforts, she hasn’t quite gelled with Sherlock or Joan. In this episode, however, the man who sexually assaulted and tortured Kitty in London appears in New York, giving her a shot at revenge – and the sense of purpose she’s been lacking.
