Heading into the March 2 episode of Chicago P.D., we thought it would be ending with heartbreak for Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) when it came to the custody battle for Makayla. But we didn’t imagine just how that happened.

After discovering that it had been Makayla’s uncle on her father’s side, Theo (Derek Webster), who had been visiting her at school, Burgess found herself fighting for custody. But by the end of “Blood Relation,” Burgess and Ruzek had good news: They won! “Bottom line is who the child’s most bonded with, so she’s ours,” she explained. They headed upstairs to see their kid and celebrate, only to find Makayla’s babysitter in bad shape, bleeding, on the floor. “They took her,” she said as Burgess found Makayla’s room empty.

That leads right into the promo for the March 9 episode. “Makayla’s gone. Somebody took her, Adam!” Burgess says. He assures her that they’ll find her. “Hope is not lost. You gotta be in this moment right now,” Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) says. “There is still time.”

Watch the video below for a look at the investigation and Burgess breaking into a building and checking under blankets somewhere. Plus, it looks like both Burgess and Ruzek will be aggressively confronting people and we can expect at least one (heartbreaking?) Burzek moment.

In “Gone,” NBC teases, “the unit scrambles to search for one of their own who is in grave danger.” The question is, of course, who took Makayla. Theo doesn’t seem like the type to do so or to hire someone to do so, plus he would be the obvious choice. Is this related to one of Burgess or Ruzek’s cases? Is this related to Makayla’s family? Will Burgess still have custody of Makayla by the end of the next episode, or might this cause the judge to reverse her decision — or Burgess to make a heartbreaking one?
