In what could have been a plotline straight from Curb Your Enthusiasm, HBO pulled Tuesday’s premiere of The Larry David Story just hours before it was scheduled to air, leaving fans confused and disappointed.

The only details given for the sudden delay came from the official HBO Documentaries Twitter account, which stated, “The #LarryDavidStory on @HBOMax is being postponed. Instead, Larry has decided he wants to do it in front of an audience. Stay tuned for more info.”

News of Larry David wanting to present the show in front of an audience came as a surprise to some fans, given that the Seinfeld co-creator is known for his misanthropic and unsociable personality. “Larry hates people. Why would he do that?” commented one viewer on Instagram.

It also reminded longtime Curb Your Enthusiasm fans of the pilot episode of the beloved sitcom, where David cancels a proposed HBO special. Some even believed it was an intentional reference; “I’m surprised no one else picked up on this. It’s pretty genius imo,” noted one fan.

“This is straight out of an episode of Curb,” tweeted another viewer. “I can just see Larry telling Jeff, “ …ehhh, I think want a live audience.””

The two-part documentary was scheduled to premiere at 9 PM on HBO on Tuesday and be available for streaming on HBO Max. In the doc, David sits down with his friend and collaborator Larry Charles to discuss his personal and professional life, reflect on his journey into showbiz, his success with Seinfeld and Curb, and his thoughts on everything from metaphysics to parenthood.

According to Deadline, the plans changed at the last minute because David was not happy with the finished product and intends to redo it with a live audience.

A trailer for the doc was released last month, featuring clips of David opening up about his career. “I am a total fraud, and the Curb outlet for me is this guy I wanna be,” he admits in the teaser. “He’s completely, completely honest, just the opposite of who I am. And it’s a thrill. I got lucky… I’ll leave it at that.”
