Steven Boyer is an American theater actor who earned rave reviews in 2015 for his starring role in the Broadway production of "Hand to God." Born and raised in Ohio, Boyer grew up wanting to do something big with his life. So when he turned 18 he did the most radical thing he could do - he moved to New York City to become an actor. It was there that Boyer studied the craft at the prestigious Juilliard School, thus learning to hone his skills for performance. After he graduated from Juilliard Boyer played mostly muggers and street toughs in a number of plays throughout New York. By the early 2000s, however, the acting roles started to dry up, so Boyer traveled the country telling jokes as a standup comedian. He found standup and theater acting to be fairly similar, and found making people laugh to be quite an enjoyable way to make a living. After a few years of performing comedy, however, Boyer realized that he missed acting. He quickly gave up standup and moved back to New York City to see if he could restart his career. He joined the Ensemble Studio Theatre where he met a playwright by the name of Robert Askins. Askins had just written a new play called "Hand to God," about a boy who learns about the Bible through a talking puppet, and thought Boyer would be great as the lead. After reading the play Boyer jumped at the opportunity. "Hand to God" had its initial debut off-Broadway in 2011 and was a smash success. The play returned for another Off-Broadway run in 2012 and 2014, before making its Broadway debut in 2015. For his role in the Broadway production, Boyer received a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor, while "Hand to God" also earned a nod for Best New Play. Boyer made his first major TV appearance when he joined the cast of mockumentary legal comedy "Trial and Error" (NBC 2017- ).
