Oscars 2023: ‘Best Picture’ Winners From the Last 20 Years, Ranked

The 95th Oscars are approaching, where films such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, and more all stand a chance at winning.

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on  May 16, 1929, and the event has stood for the pursuit of excellence in the film industry for almost one hundred years. The greatest achievement for the greatest night of Hollywood goes to whichever film wins the Best Picture award, as that body of work instantly becomes part of history.

So despite the film industry’s obsession with the gaudy gold trophy and the general public’s usual lack of interest, securing one cements filmmakers’ and actors’ place in history. But it also means you’ve set yourself and work to be scrutinized, ranked, and less deserving of a win than other nominated films forever.

So before Best Picture for 2022 is decided, we’ve ranked all the Best Picture wins from the last 20 years. Using IMDb scores as a basis for our rankings, we thought there would be some disagreements behind their order in terms of greatness. But as we curated the list, we found we couldn’t have agreed more with a great deal of the placements.
