It’s not uncommon for couples from The Bachelor franchise to go their separate ways after a period of time, but this is a split we didn’t see coming. After a year of dating, Bachelor in Paradise alums Joe Amabile and Kendall Long have decided to call it quits. This news comes just a month after the couple, who lived together in West Hollywood, announced they had adopted a dog together.

“We have decided mutually to go our separate ways. Joe has made the decision to move back to Chicago while Kendall will be remaining in her hometown of Los Angeles,” the pair revealed in a statement to BachelorNation.com. “Our family and friends have always been an extremely important element to who we are as people. We can’t imagine continuing our lives without them closer, especially when thinking of starting a family of our own one day. We both respect each others’ decision and still have a great deal of love for each other. We appreciate all the love and support everyone has given us throughout our relationship.”

The pair, who met and fell in love on Season 5 of Bachelor in Paradise, showed no signs of trouble when they spoke with People back in December 2019 about their blossoming relationship. In fact, Amabile, also known as “Grocery Store Joe,” hinted that an engagement might be underway at the time. “We’re not engaged yet,” he said. “But I’m a sporadic person. I might just wake up one day and say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to do it!’ ”

Instead of the proposal, the couple opted for the next best thing — a puppy! “We’re in a place where we want to own a dog together and start a little family,” the former grocery store owner revealed, and just a few weeks later, their little pup, Pistachio made his Instagram debut.

Though it’s unclear who will keep the dog now that the couple has parted ways, Long shared a photo of herself holding the pup just this week, leading fans to believe that he’s staying with her in California for the time being.

Dancing With the Stars alum Amabile first competed on Becca Kufrin’s season of The Bachelorette but shocked fans after he was unexpectedly sent home on night one. Down to Date podcast host Long, on the other hand, had a little more luck during Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s season of The Bachelor, making it all the way to the top three before she was sent packing.
