Netflix Releases Trailers for Two New Series: ‘The Crown’, With ‘Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, and ‘The Get Down’ (VIDEO)

Matt Smith - The Crown - Netflix

The biggest news to come out of CES this morning is…a sizzle reel for a show about Queen Elizabeth II in her twenties! Who are we kidding, we’re excited enough for The Crown, Netflix’s new six-part series from The Queen writer Peter Morgan. The series features Claire Foy as ol’ Lizzie and it’s got former Doctor Who star Matt Smith in it, too. He plays her husband, Philip—and if anyone can make that guy sparkle, he can. And, interestingly, actor Alex Jennings, who portrayed Prince Charles in The Queen, will play Prince Edward (the man who really didn’t want to be King) here. Very cheeky.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos also showed scenes from Baz Luhrmann’s long-awaited disco-punk-hip hop series The Get Down, about being a kid in the South Bronx in the 1970s (when New York City was bankrupt in all senses of the word). It looks a bit like Strictly Ballroom meets Staying Alive meets Summer of Sam meets that amazing bit in The Wiz (the original movie) when Diana Ross sings “Home.” Also, looks like people got guns put to their heads a lot 40 years ago.

Check out the reels from both shows (which premiere later this year) below. And someone, please, mash them together to make The Crown Get Down. Thanks.
