Leftist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has delivered on his threat to sue Scott Jennings for airing a deceptively edited montage on his nationally syndicated radio show in August.

According to Deadline, Piker is seeking $72.5 million in damages from CNN’s conservative commentator. The suit stems from an August 11 episode of Jennings’ radio show, in which he played a mashup of clips from one of Piker’s Twitch streams. In one clip, Piker referenced going “back to a better time when lynchings were happening.”

Jennings introduced the clip by saying, “Now [Abdul] El-Sayed’s [Michigan Democratic Senate nominee] best friend is out there calling for Black voters to be lynched.” He went on to slam Piker’s comments and warned Black voters of the “Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings.”

An investigation by Snopes found the video misleading, explaining that it was “heavily edited and presents Piker’s spoken words without full context, and in some cases out of order… to twist their original import.” Piker’s remarks were actually a sarcastic response to “a user’s chat comment and opinions expressed by someone else in a separate video.”

“The accusation was especially calculated to provoke outrage because it invoked one of the most shameful chapters in American history,” read the 38-page suit, which was filed in federal court in D.C. on Tuesday (October 27). It described the video as “false, fabricated, and manipulated.”

It continued, “Mr. Jennings did not merely suggest that Mr. Piker held objectionable political views. He falsely told Black Americans that Mr. Piker wanted them lynched for exercising their right to vote. He used the history of racial terror as the premise for a political attack built on views Mr. Piker never expressed.”

Piker’s legal team went on to say that Jennings “falsely told his listeners that Mr. Piker had a ‘plan of returning our country to lynchings’… then he falsely told his social media followers that ‘Mr. Piker says the USA should resume lynchings against black people.'”

“These were not expressions of disagreement with Mr. Piker’s politics,” the complaint stated. “Nor were they rhetorical characterizations of an admittedly controversial commentator. They were factual assertions about what Mr. Piker had said and advocated in his work. Each statement was demonstrably false.”

Piker claims Jennings’ comments harmed his reputation and his ability to make a living. The suit also states that Piker’s legal team submitted a retraction demand to Jennings on August 31 but has not yet received a substantive response.

On his latest Twitch stream, Piker referenced the lawsuit, saying, “This is not just about Scott Jennings, although he certainly messed up. This is about truth in the media. I don’t think you should be able to get away with lying like this.”

As of writing, Jennings has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
