‘CIA’ Sneak Peek: Colin & Bill Go Undercover — Plus, Meet Geoffrey Arend’s Character

Tom Ellis as Colin — 'CIA' Season 2 Episode 4 "Black Tie Optional"

Colin (Tom Ellis) and Bill (Nick Gehlfuss) are going undercover in the Monday, October 26, episode of CIA, and TV Insider has a first look — and it’s just another instance on the show that highlights how great these two are together.

In “Black Tie Optional,” when a prominent investor begins selling highly sensitive information to Korean agents, the team must go deep undercover at a high-end gala event to prevent a deadly invasion. Colin is undercover as the date of one of the attendees — complete with tuxedo and glasses — and when she walks off to check in with the auctioneer, Bill approaches him, recorder out.

“What’s your connection to the school, sir?” he asks.

Colin, of course, has to say something about the FBI agent’s look: “Oh, look at you. Press pass is a nice touch. Why isn’t it tucked into the ribbon of your fedora?”

Over comms, Geoffrey Arend‘s character assures Bill, “On the contrary, I think you make a very convincing journalist.” Watch the full sneak peek above for more, including details about the plan.

Arend, as showrunner Mike Weiss told us ahead of the season, is playing a science and technology analyst who’s added to the bullpen.

“We’re really excited because it is only Season 2, and we only made 12 episodes of CIA, and so we’re really excited about broadening the world of these characters,” Weiss said. “There are a couple of some of our favorites that we’re going to bring back from Season 1, people who are assets, specialists, interesting people that we don’t want to forget about and that are absolutely out there working ops even when we’re not seeing them day-to-day.”

Also coming up in this next episode, CBS teases, “Bill struggles with troubling discoveries of his father’s past.” It was at the end of the Season 2 premiere that he learned that his father was CIA.

Weiss explained, “It felt like a way to fundamentally alter Bill’s understanding of his family and his dad, who he held up as a hero, and then for him to realize that on some level, he and Colin, by the end of this long journey that they’re going to go on to get to the bottom of this, are more similar in ways that he couldn’t have possibly predicted when they first met. So if your dad was CIA and your new best friend who you love and hate in equal measure, Colin, is also CIA, I mean, it’s almost as if we’re saying on some level, these two are brothers. This is a story about two people who find each other as adults, and on some deep level, they really are brothers, more even than just friends and colleagues.”
