Warning: The following post contains discussions of murder and self-harm.

The new Hulu docuseries Swipe Right on the Devil dives into the twisted story behind the 2017 murder of Sydney Loofe. After swiping right on Tinder, Sydney crossed paths with Bailey Boswell and Aubrey Trail, a couple that was wrapped up in a strange obsession with witchcraft.

The 24-year-old’s disappearance kicked off an investigation that would take several twist and turns. Trail took full responsibility for Loofe’s grisly murder, but detectives believed Boswell had more to do with the shocking act than she or Trail were letting on. Prior to his relationship with Boswell, Trail had been introduced to witchcraft.

Learn more about Boswell’s involvement, the jaw-dropping move Trail made at his trial, and the latest updates about where they are today.

What happened to Sydney Loofe?

Loofe, who lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, went missing on November 16, 2017. Her loved ones were immediately concerned about her and knew that she had recently met a girl named “Audrey” on Tinder. Once investigators were in involved, they began to connect the dots on who Loofe was with the night she went missing.

Loofe had left work to go on a date with “Audrey.” While the search was still going on, one of Loofe’s friends even created a fake account on Tinder and swiped right on “Audrey.” Once they began chatting, the friend was able to get a phone number, which she then sent to police.

Loofe’s dismembered remains were discovered on December 4, 2017.

Where is Aubrey Trail now?

Once investigators zeroed in on Trail, it didn’t take long for him to confess to Loofe’s murder. Trail claimed that he strangled her while they were having rough sex. When he was questioned about Boswell’s involvement, Trail attempted to divert attention away from her and claimed that she helped him clean up the crime scene “pretty much under duress.”

Detectives didn’t believe his story and soon discovered that both Trail and Boswell planned Loofe’s murder through various purchases and intentionally lured her to their home under the false pretense of a date. Trail was charged with first-degree murder. When his trial began, he’d had two heart attacks and a stroke, so he was confined to a wheelchair.

During the trial, Trail shouted in the courtroom, “Bailey is innocent, and I curse you all,” before slashing a razor blade across his neck several times. He’d kept the razor blade in his mouth. Trail needed 88 stitches and two blood transfusions, but he survived.

Trail was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He remains on death row at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in Nebraska. As of October 2026, the state has not set an execution date.

Where is Bailey Boswell now?

Boswell’s trial began on September 25, 2020. In yet another shocking twist, it was revealed that Boswell and Trail had been sending encrypted messages to each other in jail in order to plan out their stories for their trials.

Trail had gotten Boswell involved in his interest with witchcraft. When Boswell wanted to be a “witch,” Trail was willing to do anything to make that happen. “So I decided to kill Sydney and take her soul,” he said. “We killed her because we wanted to kill her.” After Loofe’s murder, Trail said that he and Boswell had plans to kill the other women involved in their “coven.” Trail revealed that Bailey wanted to become “the world’s greatest female serial killer.”

Boswell was also convicted of first-degree murder. In 2024, the Nebraska Supreme Court declined Boswell’s appeal to exclude certain evidence used to convict her, per WOWT First Alert 6. She is serving out her life sentence at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women.
