‘Jeopardy!’ Contestants Share What Happens During Show Breaks
Have you ever wondered what happened during the commercial breaks of Jeopardy!? Past contestants shared what goes on during the breaks after a curious fan asked about it.
“Question regarding breaks on the show,” a Reddit user asked. “I have had Jeopardy! on in the background while I’m working, and one thing that has raised a question in my mind is the idea of breaks. Like when they go to break before Final Jeopardy, how long do the contestants have to make their wager before they see the FJ question? With everything being on computers, how long do they have between Jeopardy and DJ?”
One contestant, who didn’t share their name, said it was the “longest five minutes of their life.” Mehal Shah, who appeared on the game show in November 2024, as well as the Champions Wildcard and TOC, told the fan that the break in the middle of the Jeopardy round is the longest.
“Ken [Jennings] does some audience Q&A, and you have some time to reflect on how the beginning has gone. If there aren’t too many things that need to be re-recorded, it’s done in 10 minutes,” Shah said.
He went on to say that the break between the first and second round is only five minutes, but it gets really intense because that’s where most of the game is won. “The break between Double Jeopardy and Final Jeopardy is about 10 minutes, again, no Q&A. Either the game is a lock in which case it’s pretty chill, or contestants will stew over their wager for the whole time, checking and rechecking their math,” he ended.
However, Justin Robbins, who was on Jeopardy! for three games in September, said that their break is “roughly the same amount as a commercial break.” Many other contestants reiterated his statement, thinking that it is about four to five minutes.
Some contestants said that producers gave them water during the break and a piece of paper and a Sharpie in case the screen failed or there’s math involved for the wager. The producers also tell the contestants to write “What/who is…” during that time, so they have more time to think and write the answer.
