Friday marked two years since Liam Payne’s death, and Harry Styles marked the somber anniversary by dedicating an emotional new ballad, “What Is Enough,” to his late One Direction bandmate.
Styles made the dedication at Friday’s concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden as he continued his 30-show residency at the Manhattan arena.
“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me, as I’ve said,” he told the crowd at Friday’s show, per E! News. “I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there. There are so many people in my life — friends, and people that I’ve worked with — that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”
He added: “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other. … So many people who have touched my life in such special ways, I wouldn’t be here without. I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”
And that’s when he segued into “What Is Enough.”
“I’m not wise enough but I / Wrote you a letter just to burn it up and watch it rise / Like you’re in the sky,” he sang. “I could tell you what it’s like / To bury friends on Wednesday nights / Gathered in the garden round a fire.”
Styles and Payne performed alongside Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson in One Direction from the group’s formation on the British reality competition The X Factor in 2010 until its hiatus in 2016. One Direction sold more than 200 million records and earned seven BRIT Awards, seven American Music Awards, and six Billboard Music Awards, according to Sony Music.
Payne died on October 16, 2024, at age 31 after falling from a balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious,” Styles said in a statement after Payne’s death. “He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”
