What To Know

  • Jamie Roy opens up about filming Outlander: Blood of My Blood‘s action-packed battle scenes.
  • Plus, he teases Brian’s unique connections with Murtagh and Dougal.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood took to the battlefield in Season 2’s latest installment, “Forgive Me, Father,” as Brian (Jamie Roy) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine) found themselves standing on opposing sides. Warning: Spoilers for Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 5 ahead!

As Brian stood alongside Murtagh (Rory Alexander) and Dougal (Sam Retford) with the Jacobites, Henry was forced to fight with the Grants alongside the redcoats. While the stature of the battle wasn’t of the same magnitude as the flagship show’s Culloden, it was a fierce exchange, reminiscent of the charged fights that once pitted Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) against Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).

But what is it really like filming one of Blood of My Blood‘s epic battle sequences? “Oh, man, it was so much fun,” Roy muses. “We rehearsed for quite a few weeks before we actually shot [the scenes], and it was great. I think the hardest thing was having to fight with a shield and a sword at the same time.”

As Roy explains, “Those shields are heavy and floppy, so at the end of the day… your shoulders just like [points to shoulders]… I definitely got bigger shoulders over the course of four weeks doing all that stuff,” he notes.

So, should fans join the Blood of My Blood training camp? “People would love and hate it at the same time,” Roy jokes.

After previously winning over Dougal’s battlefield respect enough to fight alongside him, the episode hinted at Brian and Murtagh’s quest to save the MacKenzie clansman at Fort William. Of course, we know Dougal will survive whatever torture he faces at this next location, but when we asked Roy about the connection Brian and Dougal have in Season 2, the actor shares, “There’s some sort of respect that’s just kind of simmering under the surface, and then they go into war together, and I think that bonds people quite deeply, and then something else happens… that definitely makes Dougal, dare I say, a fan of Brian.”

Could it be the rescue mission on the horizon? Fans will have to tune into Episode 6 to find out. One thing’s for certain, though: Murtagh’s remaining by Brian’s side, as Roy remarks, “They’re still thick as thieves, best buddies, [and] can’t be separated.”
