What To Know

  • Is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia going to return for Season 19?
  • We take a look at how Season 18’s finale serves as both a perfect ending and a launching pad for even more shenanigans.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s television run has been nothing short of remarkable, becoming the longest-running live-action comedy on television. But is Season 18 the end, or only a launchpad for several more seasons to come? Warning: Spoilers for the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 Finale!

While the comedy has always wrapped up their stories by the end of a season, there was a sentimental overtone to the latest episode, “The Guys Have a Sleepover,” which leaves us wondering: Could it serve as a sweet farewell to the characters we’ve come to enjoy? Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) may be less than perfect, but their small bouts of growth, however brief, keep Always Sunny a show worth tuning into.

The only uncertainty about the show’s future at the moment is the lack of a renewal, but as fans know, Season 18 was the last of a four-season pickup announced in 2020. While we’d imagine FX would announce the final season of Always Sunny as such, whenever that were to occur, we’re curious if a renewal for Season 19 is around the corner, or if a multi-season pickup is on the way like it was in 2020.

The finale saw Dee beg the guys to have a sleepover at her place after undergoing LASIK surgery, but instead they have their own sleepover, which leads to some heartwarming connection between Dennis and Charlie, when the latter realizes how scared Dennis is of sleepovers. And despite the men not being there for Dee initially, Artemis (Artemis Pebdani) came to her rescue, albeit briefly, before kicking off a Ouija session, amid Frank’s break-in to the apartment.

By the end of the episode, the whole Gang was huddled up in sleeping bags, with Dennis and Charlie being the only ones left awake as they decided to draw on the sleeping bunch’s faces. If it were to be the end, we could think of nothing better, but Season 18’s finale also proves we could continue watching the Gang until the end of time. Thankfully, we have plenty of hope that will turn out to be true.
