The late-night ratings for September are in, and it’s good news for Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers, who both saw big gains in total viewers and the coveted Adults 18-49 demographic.
After a two-month summer hiatus filled with guest hosts, Kimmel returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September and so did his viewers. According to LateNighter, citing Nielsen Live+7 ratings data, Kimmel’s show averaged just over 3 million viewers nightly across 13 first-run episodes.
The show, which airs in the 11:35 pm slot, was up 43 percent in total viewers from its August average. The key demo saw an even bigger jump, up 59 percent to an average of 336,000 viewers.
In comparison, NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, also airing at 11:35 pm, averaged 1.50 million total viewers, down 3 percent from its August average. However, Fallon did increase in the demo, averaging 230,000 viewers, up 24 percent from the month before.
NBC saw better news at 12:37 am, as Meyers returned to Late Night after seven weeks of repeats. Across seven first-run episodes, the show averaged 1.04 million total viewers and 139,000 demo viewers. This was up 49 percent in total viewers and up 56 percent in the demo compared to the August average.
Meanwhile, CBS saw mixed results with Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed, which aired first-run episodes in its first half-hour slot of the night. The 11:35 pm edition averaged 787,000 total viewers and 106,000 demo viewers across seven first-run episodes. This was up 3 percent in total viewers and 14 percent in the demo from the prior month.
The show’s second half-hour at 12:05 am remained in reruns and averaged 550,000 total viewers and 72,000 demo viewers. This was down 1 percent in total viewers but up 11 percent in the demo compared to the August average.
Elsewhere, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show returned from its hiatus with 13 first-run September episodes. The show averaged 1.01 million total viewers and 157,000 demo viewers. There are no monthly comparison numbers as the show did not air episodes in August.
