What To Know

  • Herbert Nordrum, starring as Colonel Brandon in the new Sense and Sensibility film, accidentally uttered an expletive during a live interview on NBC’s Today.
  • The Today hosts responded with humor to Nordrum’s slip, welcoming him to New York and joking about the incident on air.
  • Nordrum shared insights into preparing for his first English-language role, including working with a dialect coach and practicing lines with a wine cork in his mouth.

Going from Sense and Sensibility to censors and censor-ability, actor Herbert Nordrum dropped an expletive on live television as he appeared in Friday’s edition of Today.

Nordrum stopped by the NBC morning show on October 9 to discuss his role in the latest Sense and Sensibility film, a Jane Austen adaptation in which he plays Colonel Brandon.

And to celebrate Nordrum’s first trip to New York City, the Today crew surprised the Norwegian thespian with a platter of cheese pizza and bagels with schmear.

“This is on my list!” Nordrum said. “Holy s–t!”

Realizing his gaffe, the actor slapped one hand over his mouth and clapped the other to Today anchor Craig Melvin’s shoulder.

“I’m so sorry!” he said.

But Melvin and the other Today co-hosts cracked up about the slip-up.

“You are a New Yorker! You are officially a New Yorker,” Melvin said. “We’ll clean it up for the West Coast.”

And at the end of the segment, Melvin quipped, “You were almost worth the FCC fine.”

In another endearing moment from the interview, Nordrum explained how he prepared for his first English-language role, one that required a British accent. “I had to work so hard, so hard,” the Oslo native, known for his role in 2021’s The Worst Person in the World, told the Today team. “I worked really hard with a dialect coach. And I started using a wine cork in my mouth, so I said the line, like, a thousand times with the wine cork. And when you take the cork out, it suddenly becomes smooth. But I did look like a psychopath on sets with, like, different wine corks in my mouth all the time.”

Sense and Sensibility, adapted by screenwriter Diana Reid and directed by Georgia Oakley, also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw. Focus Features is releasing the film in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 16.
