What To Know

  • Lawrence O’Donnell said the most urgent issue facing the nation is whether President Donald Trump is experiencing cognitive decline.
  • O’Donnell cited Trump’s declining ability to convincingly lie and his use of “sir” in fabricated stories.
  • The MS NOW host referred to the president as a “lifelong pathological liar.”

MS NOW anchor Lawrence O’Donnell cut through the noise on Wednesday’s edition of The Last Word, arguing that the most urgent question facing the nation is whether President Donald Trump is “insane.”

“No matter what the news of the day is, if the president of the United States is insane, that is the biggest news of the day or any day,” O’Donnell said at the top of his show. “That is what will live in history. That is what historians will devote their attention to if the president of the United States is insane.”

He continued, “If the president of the United States’ mind is crumbling before our very eyes, that is the most important story of the day because everything else follows from that, everything!”

Trump has not been diagnosed with a cognitive disorder, and O’Donnell isn’t a medical professional; still, the longtime reporter added, “If a lifelong pathological liar turns and finds himself on what appears to be a slide down a dementia slope, then that pathological liar would probably lose the very ability to tell his lies.”

O’Donnell said Trump is no longer as good at lying as he used to be. He pointed to the president’s “first political lie” 15 years ago about Barack Obama’s birth certificate. “He was better at lying then. I mean, he was terrible at it, but better than now. He talked fast, and he ran over the gullible TV interviewers of the time.”

He then noted one of Trump’s telltale signs of lying: the president’s use of the word “sir” when recalling “imagined conversations.”

“We all know by now, when we hear the word ‘sir,’ everything after that word will be Donald Trump’s hallucination of a conversation that never happened,” O’Donnell added.

The news anchor went on to say that Trump has lost the ability to tell these “sir” stories in recent years. He pointed to a story the president told at a recent midterms campaign rally in Texas, in which he claimed First Lady Melania Trump had addressed him as “sir.”

“Donald Trump would never have claimed that any one of his three wives would ever call him sir, and yet he did that tonight, and in this story, he’s not the smart one for once,” O’Donnell said.

He reiterated that Trump potentially “losing his mind” is the biggest story right now. “If the man who has the nuclear codes and can launch a nuclear war at any moment, after already having launched a war for absolutely no reason, if he is in cognitive decline, there is no bigger story in the world.”
