Melania Trump Branded ‘Out of Touch’ After Sharing ‘Opulent’ White House Video
What To Know
- Melania Trump posted a video showcasing the lavish preparations for a White House state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
- Social media users accused her of being “out of touch” amid widespread economic hardship and rising inflation.
- The backlash was fueled by ongoing struggles with high gas and grocery prices.
First Lady Melania Trump came under fire on Thursday (September 17) after sharing a video that critics said made her look “out of touch” with the American public.
The video in question showed White House preparations for President Donald Trump‘s upcoming state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping. It featured shots of an opulent chandelier, an elaborately decorated dinner table, and expensive-looking glassware and silverware.
“THE WHITE HOUSE STATE DINNER. Every detail considered,” Melania wrote alongside the video, which was posted on both her personal and official FLOTUS X accounts. “An experience thoughtfully conceived and exquisitely realized for our distinguished guests.”
Xi and Trump will meet next week, four months after their previous face-to-face meeting in Beijing in May. The pair is expected to discuss the rising threat of artificial intelligence, the Iran war, trade, and more. “I’ll be discussing almost everything with him,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday (September 13).

However, the lavish dinner has drawn criticism amid ongoing economic struggles. Inflation has continued to rise since Trump launched his war with Iran back in February. The conflict raised gas prices because Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported. Families are also facing soaring grocery prices.
Social media users made their voices heard after Melania posted the White House dinner video, with some comparing her to former Queen of France, Marie Antoinette.
“Let them eat cake right, Melanie?” wrote one X user.
“Way to read the room. You are in touch with the American people. Truly,” another sarcastically said.
So you’re struggling but at least the White House has a nice fancy dinner! https://t.co/NTkdKYzPKT

Another wrote, “People can’t afford rent and food, and your entitled ass posts this crap?!”

“So you’re struggling but at least the White House has a nice fancy dinner!” one commenter added.
“Grok, make the most cringe, out of touch post imaginable,” joked another.
“Marie Antoinette vibes…” another said.
Another added, “Thankyou Melania Antoinette…meanwhile families are struggling to eat due to inflation caused by your husbands Epstein Distraction War.”
“Americans are getting destroyed by high prices. The Trump’s are flying around and luxury, gold plating statues, building ball rooms and throwing lavish dinner parties,” said one commenter.
