Riley Green and Queen Latifah are the newest additions to The Voice for Season 30, joining Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine as coaches for the milestone season.
“Queen Latifah is someone we have wanted for so long,” executive producer Audrey Morrissey tells TV Insider. “We wanted her to be a mentor, and we weren’t able to get the planets to align for that. … She’s one of those rare people, I’d say. She has this internal light switch. She literally radiates.”
Morrissey teased that “all the artists loved” Queen Latifah. “She was one of those coaches that had to be really careful about when she turned her chair because she was likely going to get that person,” Morrissey admitted. “I mean, she was like a magnetizer. Even if they weren’t necessarily thinking they would go with her, she just had that pull.”
As for rising country star Green, Morrissey revealed that he’s been “such a discovery” for everyone involved. “He is so funny. He just brings that Southern gentleman and with just a razor-sharp, dry wit about him,” she confirmed.
And while she knows people will compare him to Blake Shelton, the last solo country male who served as a coach, she promised that Green “has his own brand of humor” and is “really hilarious.” Overall, Latifah and Green “fit right in” with longtime vets Clarkson and Levine.
“The coach dynamic, it just felt great from moment one,” Morrissey dished. “And that’s hard to do, especially with two new coaches. And I think part of it is because we had such experienced coaches that were the OGs. They’ve really done so many seasons, and then the two new ones just got it instantly. So we had a lot of fun and are continuing to have fun.”
