What To Know

  • Law & Order: SVU returns for Season 28 on October 8.
  • A new promo shows J. Smith-Cameron’s character, a jury consultant coming on as a “peer” for Mariska Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson.

New season, new Benson, promises the new Law & Order: SVU promo that first aired during the Emmys, which was hosted by the captain herself, Mariska Hargitay.

The long-running NBC drama returns for its 28th season on Thursday, October 8, and Benson’s facing just how much has and hasn’t changed in the time she’s been doing this job. (She was a detective when the series premiered in 1999.)

“I have been doing this work for nearly 30 years. I told myself it’s the fight that matters, but nothing has changed,” Benson says. Her new “peer,” jury consultant Gwen Sharpe, played by J. Smith-Cameron (who recurs), suggests, “So then, just fight different.”

It looks like the others are going to be worried about Benson. “Just be careful,” Rollins (Kelli Giddish) says at one point, while Carisi (Peter Scanavino) asks, “What is going on with you, Liv?”

As the captain explains, “It’s more complicated than just right and wrong. I’ll do whatever it takes because somebody has to!” Plus, who’s getting attacked in the courtroom?! Watch the video below for more.

Showrunner Michele Fazekas explained to TV Insider why she’s bringing in Gwen as a “peer” for Olivia. “Benson is the boss, so when she’s despairing or disillusioned, you’re not going to really talk to your employees, the people who are your subordinates, because as much as she’s friends with them and she’s friends with Rollins, as a good manager, you’re not going to do that. So, I like giving her somebody who’s very, very experienced in a different way, who she can sort of have these conversations with,” she shared.

Benson is going to be feeling a bit “disillusioned” in Season 28, as the show takes a look at how much things have and have not changed when it comes to the squad’s investigations.

“What I got interested in this season was somewhat inspired by the case that we are doing in the first episode, which is a case that really highlights as far as we have come in the investigation of sex crimes and in how we as a society view sexual assault and how we define sexual assault; in some ways, we’re still back 30 years ago,” Fazekas previewed. “It’s a case that is really kind of disheartening for Benson. And she ends up sort of saying like, ‘Oh, in some ways, yes, nothing has changed.’ I wanted to see what she does with that, and so how does Benson push against her own boundaries?”

She continued, “How does Benson push further to get justice and even sort of challenge her own ideas of what is ethical and what is the right thing to do? How far will she go to get justice? I like playing with those boundaries and pushing against them because it is a little bit of being, not despair so much, but certainly disillusioned as you can be with the justice system when things seem to be so stacked against you. I like putting her in that spot and seeing what she does with it.”
