The View cohost Ana Navarro has decided to go public with some personally devastating news: Her husband, Al Cárdenas, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive brain disorder that has also affected other famous people, including Michael J. Fox, Neil Diamond, and Carly Simon.

It was the latter singer’s decision to go public that inspired Navarro and her husband, a lawyer and conservative political activist, to speak out about his condition.

In a clip from her podcast, Bleep! With Ana Navarro, shared on Navarro’s social media pages Monday (September 14), she explained, “Al was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over two years ago. Maybe you heard earlier this summer, Carly Simon, who both Al and I admire greatly. She announced her Parkinson’s diagnosis, and my husband and I both read the announcement, read the statement that she put out, and it’s something that touched us greatly.”

Navarro continued, “We talked about the need of destigmatizing this disease. We talked about the need, the duty, the opportunity of using my public platform to talk about it. So, Carly Simon, in her statement, she said, ‘It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life. These days, I move more slowly. I lean on others more than I once did, but I am still very much here. I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working.'”

Navarro captioned the clip to note that she’d received specific permission from Cárdenas to talk about his diagnosis. “With Al’s consent, I am publicly discussing his Parkinson’s diagnosis, in hopes it helps destigmatize the disease and helps others going through a similar journey. Tune into this week’s episode of @bleepwithananavarro to hear me discuss what being one of the 1 million American families living with Parkinson’s has been like for us.”
