‘The View’ Cohosts React to Trump’s $5k Promise: ‘Liar’
The cohosts of The View were not swayed by Donald Trump‘s assertion that, if Republicans win the House and Senate again, he’ll send $5,000 “dividend checks” to every American adult.
On Thursday’s (September 10) show, Trump’s lengthy convention speech and promise was the first “Hot Topic” of the day, and Joy Behar reacted to a clip from the event to say, simply, “He’s a liar.”
Whoopi Goldberg then wasted no time listing out the other times Americans were supposed to receive checks during Trump’s second term: “I mean, he did already promise checks before for the tariffs and the DOGE dividends. Remember, we were all going to get those as well. I don’t recall getting a check. So I’m a little annoyed about that. In February 2025, Musk floated the idea of $5,000 dividend checks from DOGE savings, and You Know Who backed it. So what is what is this? We know there a lot of money is being spent, but why play this particular card when you know you ain’t giving anybody anything?”
Behar then offered up the first answer, saying, “They’re so desperate not to lose. Even Mike Johnson said that they are going to go after them if the Democrats are in power about the $2 billion that [Trump] and his family made while he was president, about the Epstein files that keep blocking the exposure of those…. about the abuses of ICE, about what they’re doing to immigrants and the way they’re behaving towards these people about the Iran war and the fact that [Pete] Hegseth purged top military officers and how they’re putting this country and the world at risk. That is what’s going to happen.”
Sara Haines then reacted on the merits of the offer, saying, “They got elected on the economy, and they haven’t been able to do anything to help people. In fact, people are worse off right now. So I think right now they’re trying to dangle this money, which whether it’s even legal or they can pull it off, it’s $1.2 trillion, and the president saying, ‘Oh, we’ll get that from the tariffs.’ The tariffs won’t cover that, so that’s not going to happen. And I just think that considering affordability, this is like a stimulus check. Those are quick. That will put $1 trillion of economic pressure on an already bursting scene right now… It’s a band-aid for something that has deeper problems.”
Sunny Hostin then argued, “If you can’t win, you try to cheat, and that’s what they’re doing. They’re just trying to cheat. They’ve redrawn maps. They’re gerrymandering. They’re attacking mail-in ballots. This is the first president in history that’s tried to overturn an election. That’s what’s happening.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin, a self-proclaimed Republican, added, “I’m old enough as a conservative to [remember] when we always called that socialism, the government just giving handouts to people, and to Sarah’s point, $1.3 trillion at a time when our budget deficit is $1.8 trillion dollars, so we’re just going to spike the deficit and then add to already high inflation. It’s terrible economics. It also can’t happen. It would have to be passed through Congress. That’s never going to happen… But come on, just run on something you’re going to actually deliver for the public, not cheap hand tricks.”
“The word gift is one letter short of grift. I just noticed that,” Behar then quipped.
Goldberg closed out the segment to say, “I am tired of him because it’s … I feel like all he’s done is yanked everybody, side, side, side, run them around, and scared everybody and made people really afraid for their lives. ‘Can I feed my family? Can I just can I put gas in my car? Can I go to work?’ And it’s like … it’s relentless.”

“Republicans are promising the government will borrow $1.3 trillion in money we don’t have to add to the $40 trillion debt to give $5,000 to everyone but only if they win the election while claiming Democrats are all socialists.”
