Wonder Man himself, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, has taken to Instagram to address the show’s surprising cancellation. Abdul-Mateen stars as Simon Williams, the superhero and struggling actor at the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+.
The news came as a major shock considering Disney+ had already renewed Wonder Man for a second season. The cancellation is even more surprising given the show’s recent awards recognition, with Abdul-Mateen earning an Emmy nomination for his performance.
“Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww!) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out,” wrote Abdul-Mateen. “I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other.”
“The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it. I could see it on the faces of the YouTube Reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all), and I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day,” he continued.
“So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”

Abdul-Mateen’s blend of humor and vulnerability helped earn the actor his second Emmy nomination. He previously won for HBO’s Watchmen, proving he has a knack for playing heroes. His lead actor nomination was a bit of a shocker for what many considered one of the MCU’s best yet most underrated series, making the show’s cancellation all the more surprising.
Fans, friends, and colleagues reached out on the post to offer support about the heartbreaking news. Actor Y’lan Noel wrote, “Well done, soldier. Up and Up,” while former Yale classmate Christopher Geary posted, “E-m-m-y. That’s all. Xoxo.” Actor C.S. Lee, who appeared with Abdul-Mateen in the film Us, wrote, “You were soooo good on this. Killing me I can’t see the continuation. Your work is just amazing.”
