Danielle Fishel Makes Candid Confession About Setting ‘Boundaries’ on ‘Girl Meets World’

Danielle Fishel made a candid confession about setting “boundaries” while filming the Boy Meets World spinoff Girl Meets World.
In an interview on the Tuesday, July 28 episode of the I Choose Me With Jennie Garth podcast, Fishel, 45, dished on being labeled “difficult” and “crazy” while filming Girl Meets World, which premiered in 2014.
“I had been a real go-with-the-flow, not ruffle any feathers, be so easy to work with, a consummate professional,” Fishel shared. “And essentially what that meant is the producers felt like they could tell me to do whatever they wanted me to do, and I would never push back.”
The actress who played Topanga Lawerence explained, “And when we got to Girl Meets World, I think I had been so used to, in my personal life, going away from that, that then when we went to the set, and I was now a new person — an adult, a grownup — who had thoughts and opinions of her own, and wasn’t incredibly shy about sharing them.”
Fishel, who was also a producer on Girl Meets World, clarified that the confrontations were never “in front of groups of people chastising somebody else’s decisions,” but rather making time to speak privately with people she “felt uncomfortable with.”
“The response was, ‘Well, she’s gone crazy! Have you seen what’s going on with her? She’s gone crazy,'” she recalled. “She’s got rules and boundaries about the way we’re allowed to talk to her and to touch her and to interact with her. It’s shocking!”
Although Fishel admitted that there was a part of her that wondered, “Am I difficult?” she was OK with the label, considering the other option.
“I guess if this is difficult, the alternative doesn’t make me feel like I can live with myself,” she said, of her thought process. “So I guess I just have to be difficult. And that has to be OK with me. I guess I am a difficult person, even though I didn’t think any of the things I was asking for, or requesting was difficult.”
Boy Meets World aired for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. In addition to Fishel, it starred Ben Savage, Rider Strong, William Daniels, Betsy Randle, Will Friedle, William Russ, Lindsay Ridgeway, Matthew Lawrence, Trina McGee, among others.
Meanwhile, Girl Meets World aired for three seasons from 2014 to 2017. Fishel and Savage reprised their roles as Topanga and Cory, with Daniels, Strong, and Friedle all making guest appearances. Rowan Blanchard played Topanga and Cory’s daughter, Rowan, while Sabrina Carpenter played her best friend, Maya, among other new cast members.
