Mary Kate Golding, who worked as a set designer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, was found dead in her New York City home on July 21. She was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, Joseph Azzaretto, who left their 11-month old child with Mary Kate’s body after he fled the residence.

Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that Joseph confessed to the murder on a phone call to a friend. The friend was the one to arrive at the home, discover Mary Kate’s body, and retrieve the child. Six hours after police came to the residence, Joseph was found hanging from a tree in a nearby park.

Mary Kate and Joseph’s deaths are believed to be a murder-suicide, although authorities have not officially classified them as such yet.

It’s not the first gruesome crime to hit the family.

In February 2020, Joseph’s brother, Nicholas Azzaretto, shot and killed their father, Frank, in Pennsylvania. Nicholas, who was 20 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in November 2021 and received a sentence of 10 years probation, with two under electronic monitoring, per Us Weekly.

The Pocono Record reported that Frank had a history of abusive behavior, information which came out during Nicholas’ hearing. His death came after an argument with his wife, Patricia, over a phone bill. Nicholas heard the argument from the basement, and when he came upstairs to ask what was going on, Frank allegedly pushed him back downstairs and continued fighting with Patricia.

Nicholas returned from the basement with a shotgun and shot Frank in the upper torso area, according to a complaint filed at the time. He then called 911 himself to report the incident.

Mary Kate’s death is the third tragedy to hit Mrs. Maisel in recent months. On July 10, Josh Grisetti, who played Ralph Emerson in 10 episodes of the show, died by suicide at the age of 44. In December 2025, Wenne Alton Davis, who starred in a 2023 episode of the comedy series, died at age 60 after being struck by a car.
