Tom Holland is speaking out about how he plans to approach dance scenes in the upcoming Fred Astaire biopic.
During a July 20 appearance on Good Morning America, the Spider-Man star promoted his upcoming projects following the release of The Odyssey. They include Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the yet-unnamed Astaire biopic.
In 2021, Holland’s casting as the iconic film dancer and choreographer was announced. Fast-forward to five years later, and the English actor, 30, opened up about tackling the job. “As soon as I finish with these tours, I’m getting back into the dance studio,” he explained.
Holland then confessed, “I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread. Because I’ve got so much work to do to try to do Fred proud.”
When George Stephanopoulos asked what it meant to “do Fred proud,” Holland explained, “I have a desire to use no doubles, to do all of the dancing, to shoot those dances in one shot how he would have done it.”
Holland also addressed taking on the role of Astaire during a July 22 appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark.
“I really feel like these two movies coming out at this time [The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day] feel like I’m kind of finishing the first chapter of my career,” he told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. “I don’t feel like I can get away with playing a boy anymore. And what I’m looking for in this next chapter is, like, the ultimate challenge and to find things that really scare me.”
Additionally, Holland shared, “Getting back into the dance studio, getting my tap shoes on again, is something that… one of the biggest regrets in my career is that when I finished Billy Elliot, I quit dancing. So to have an opportunity to get to re-explore that world I loved so much, that I owe so much to.”
The unnamed Astaire biopic, directed by Paul King, is set to start filming in January 2027.
