Who Is Hope Davis in Hulu’s Serial Killer Thriller ‘Furious’?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Furious Episodes 1 – 3. In the very first moments of Hulu’s serial killer drama Furious, the audience is introduced to the Easton family. Well, one member of it: Caleb Easton. And he is not doing so well, considering he has just been injected with a syringe full of poison and is fighting for his life when audiences first meet him. And given how short his life is after that moment, things don’t improve much from there.
With FBI Agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) leading the investigation alongside her former NYPD colleague Danny Kelly (Scoot McNairy), their first stop is the home of the victim’s family: the Eastons.
Far away from the city on a sprawling estate, it is immediately clear that the Eastons are extraordinarily wealthy and likely just as powerful. They have been at the very top of the food chain for a very long time. It is here that we’re introduced to Emma Easton, played by the always outstanding Hope Davis.
Who are the Eastons?
The Eastons are a multi-generationally wealthy family who have spent generations doing whatever they please, shielded by an obscene amount of wealth and power.
Over the course of the first three episodes, Alice connects the Eastons to the murder of a sex trafficker named Adrian Murado through a single woman. As it turns out, Caleb’s “girlfriend” has a poppy tattoo matching the one described by a witness, a tattoo that later appears in a video of an abduction with Murado as the abductor. Alice believes the same woman is responsible for killing both men, which led her to Easton Manor.
Why do Alice and Danny have to talk to the Eastons?
With Caleb, the family’s male heir, recently murdered, and Alice having uncovered a clear connection between him and human trafficker Adrian Murado, she and Danny need to ask the Eastons a few questions. Carefully.
There is one small snag: Alice’s hygiene. An odd issue, but Alice has not taken a shower in quite a bit due to the trauma she faced as a victim of violence. As a result, she has been avoiding the shower as it terrifies her. Given that they are about to chat with the upper echelon of society, Danny begs her to put on some perfume before they meet Emma.
So, who is Emma Easton?
Emma is the Easton family’s de facto spokesperson now that her father, Jay (Peter McRobbie), is ill and her brother is deceased. Caring for her sick and dying father full time, Emma is the family protector. She might look innocent in her matching sweater sets, but she can turn that expensive manicure into a weapon when needed if her family is in danger.
When Alice’s questions about her brother become too personal—and her tone grows sharper—Emma pushes right back. Alice makes it clear that Caleb suffered, hoping the detail will rattle Emma into revealing more. Instead, Emma fires back with an insult, telling Alice that she smells. What begins as routine questioning quickly turns into an interrogation, making it clear to the Eastons that they are no longer viewed as grieving victims by the FBI. They are possible suspects.
And by the end of the third episode, it’s clear they have a lot to protect. In “Memory Distortion,” Alice meets with Mira, the daughter of Oliver Charles, one of the victims recently killed in the same manner as Caleb and Adrian. Mira gives Alice a photograph showing Caleb, Adrian, Oliver, Jay Easton—Emma’s father—and an underage sex worker named Isabella, a young girl whose murder lies at the heart of the case and who holds special significance to the killer (Lola Petticrew).
