‘Collector’s Call’: Rare Disneyland Memorabilia’s Hidden Value Shocks in Sneak Peek (VIDEO)
Disney fans are in for a magical trip down memory lane in the next episode of Collector’s Call. Airing Sunday, June 14 at 6:30/5:30c on MeTV, “Meet Garner Holt: Disneyland Attractions and Memorabilia” features host Lisa Whelchel visiting Garner Holt, a renowned animatronics designer and manufacturer whose passion for Disneyland history has helped him assemble an impressive private collection of Disney theme park artifacts. TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek from the episode, which you can watch above.
From vintage ride vehicles and attraction props to animatronic figures and rare relics from beloved attractions that have long since disappeared or been reimagined, Holt’s collection offers a fascinating look at Disneyland’s past and the stories behind some of its most iconic experiences.
In the scene, Whelchel recalls riding the legendary Matterhorn Bobsleds on her 16th birthday with her crush at the time, actor Ike Eisenmann, best known for starring in Escape to Witch Mountain. She also remembers sharing the ride with Brooke Shields, who was seated in the back of one of the attraction’s original bobsled cars, making the experience even more memorable.
Holt talks about acquiring the vintage ride cars at a Disney auction, giving him the rare opportunity to purchase the decommissioned Matterhorn Bobsled vehicles. Making them even more special, one of the vehicles bears the autograph of Bob Gurr, one of Disneyland’s original Imagineers who helped design many of the park’s most iconic attractions and worked closely with Walt Disney himself.
He also discloses that the vehicles were purchased years ago for just $15,000, a steal compared to what they are worth today. According to Disney-park expert and collector Joel Magee, the last one (“And that was just one”) that was sold nabbed just over $135,000 on the market, making Whelchel gasp.
In addition to the ride vehicle, Holt also had an original Matterhorn Bobsleds sign with the height restrictions for the ride. Holt got the sign years ago for $1,000, but collectors today would grab it at auction for as high as $15,000.
Other legendary pieces in Holt’s collection include a Dumbo ride vehicle, a turtle from Disneyland’s original Submarine Voyage attraction, and a flying pirate ship from the Peter Pan ride, just to name a few. For fans of Disneyland, theme parks, and Disney history, the episode offers a fascinating look at some of the park’s most beloved attractions through the eyes of a collector dedicated to preserving their legacy.
