‘Wheel of Fortune’ Fans Screamed at Their TV Over Couple’s $128,000 Loss
So close! Wheel of Fortune fans were left screaming at their TVs after a couple lost out on taking home over $128,000 in the Bonus Round.
Couples returned to the game show for the “Love Is In The Air” theme on April 3 after a compilation week ended on Wheel of Fortune. Susan and Evan Brandt, from Overland Park, Kansas, solved the first toss-up. The couple met in their high school band.
They played against Shelly and Doug Tatum, from Cincinnati, Ohio, and Megan and Michael Heiser, from Kissimmee, Florida. The Brandts then solved the second toss-up, putting $3,000 in their bank.
The Heisers, who did not have love at first sight, solved “Strawberry Peach Tart” for the lead at $5,200. The couple solved “She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah,” putting $17,300 in their bank.
The Brants tried to put more money in their bank after solving three letters on the next puzzle, but they landed on Bankrupt. The Tatums, who take a cruise with their extended family every Christmas, guessed a “S,” but it wasn’t in the puzzle, so the turn moved to the Heisers.
They lost a turn. The Brandts went Bankrupt again. The Tatums tried to solve “Enjoying an Incredible Year,” but they were wrong. The Heisers then solved “Enjoying An Incredible Meal” for a trip to Argentina. This put $26,465 in their bank.
The Brandts solved two of the three triple toss-ups, giving them $4,000 more. No one solved the third one before it was fully revealed.
The Heisers solved the final puzzle — “Seven of Hearts.” This gave them a final total of $28,645, advancing them to the Bonus Round. They chose “Phrase.”
The Brandts went home with $7,000. Since the Tatums did not win any money, Wheel of Fortune gave them $1,000.
The couple was given the usual “R, S, T, L, N, and E” by the Bonus Round. They rounded out their puzzle with “H, C, P, and O.”
The puzzle then looked like “_ _NC_ TH_T.” As the clock counted down, the Heisers guessed “Punch That,” “Mince That,” and “Dance That.”
They couldn’t solve “Fancy That.” The couple lost out on taking home $128,645 after there was $100,000 in the envelope.
“Oh my goodness!” Megan shouted. “So close!”
Reddit users reacted to the couple’s loss, wondering how they didn’t figure out the Bonus puzzle. “Why couldn’t they figure out the bonus round? I was screaming at the TV, FANCY THAT!!! And they could have had the $100K,” one fan said.
“‘PHASE’ does them in. Should have gone with the ‘A’ in THAT. Might have helped with FANCY,” another wrote.
“First time this year $100,000 was revealed, and it just HAD to be a loss,” a third wrote.
