What To Know

  • Fans of The View have expressed concern over Whoopi Goldberg’s increasing difficulty reading the teleprompter.
  • Some viewers believe Goldberg’s performance as moderator has declined and are calling for her to step down.
  • Despite her high salary, Goldberg has stated she cannot afford to retire from The View.

Whoopi Goldberg has served as a moderator on ABC’s The View for almost 20 years, but some fans are starting to wonder if it’s time for the EGOT winner to step away.

The debate began after a fan on the The View Reddit subforum noticed that Goldberg was having difficulty reading the teleprompter while moderating the daytime panel show. While noting they are a “huge fan” of Goldberg, the user said the 70-year-old actress has “been having a really tough time reading the prompter and setting up the stories.”

“I think the producers are doing her a disservice. She’s let be it known she’s dyslexic,” the Reddit poster wrote, highlighting how Goldberg’s dyslexia could make it difficult for her to read the prompter. “This feels like something Brian [Teta, exec producer] and the producers could fix.”

The user suggested, “Maybe slow the prompter down or make the words bigger. Also maybe sound out some of the names before going on air.”

Another commenter agreed, writing, “It’s painful watching her struggle with the teleprompter. I have a son who has dyslexia so I have mad respect for their plight but it feels stressful watching her mispronouncing names and fighting for her life some days with that teleprompter.”

“Clearly she struggles with reading that teleprompter more and more. It’s hard to watch, but more than that, I feel bad for her,” said another.

Others suggested that maybe it’s time for Goldberg to step down and let someone else take over as moderator.

“She’s been on autopilot for the best part of a decade,” said one commenter. “Every day delivering the same rambling speeches and doing the fake Valley Girl voice and swinging rapidly between pretending not to care and being so passionate that nobody dare disagree with her. 19 years is a good run. Time to say goodbye!”

“I could not agree more. She’s over the job, probably just hanging in for the money. I wish she would move on,” wrote another.

“It’s always been about money, but every year it feels more disrespectful to the show, the topics, and essentially the viewers… Whoopi doesn’t care at all now,” another added.

Another said, “I wish she would just go back to acting. I adore her as an actress and thought she is a B- at best as a moderator.”

As for who would take over as moderator should Goldberg step down, many suggested fellow panelist Joy Behar, who leads The View’s weekend edition.

“Joy is a good choice. She is also fun. Her jokes are better and actually makes one laugh,” said one Reddit user.

Another added, “Joy moderates The Weekend View really well… because it’s like the original View.”

“I much prefer Joy as the moderator,” wrote another.

One fan said, “I think Joy is a much better moderator, she actually engages and asks questions after someone makes their point, really enjoyed having her do it full time while Whoopi was in Italy.”

Goldberg has previously been asked about stepping away from The View, but said she can’t “afford” to do so.

Whoopi Goldberg, the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner with an estimated net worth between $30 million and $60 million, says she can’t afford to retire from The View.

“Who can afford to do that? If you don’t marry well, you’ve got to keep working,” she told Entertainment Tonight last year. “I’ve got to keep paying those bills, baby.”

The Sister Act star, who has an estimated net worth between $30 million and $60 million and makes $8 million a year from The View, made similar comments on the show in 2024.

“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me, too. I work for a living,” she said, per Entertainment Weekly. “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, okay? So, I’m a working person, you know?”
