‘9-1-1’: Tim Minear Explains Bobby’s Death & Reveals How Everyone Will Be Grieving
Spoiler Alert
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 “Lab Rats.”]
9-1-1 just delivered its most devastating episode yet with outstanding performances from everyone, especially Peter Krause, Angela Bassett, and Oliver Stark. (If only the Emmys recognized more broadcast shows — Krause would be a serious contender.) And in it, the show killed off its first major character.
The episode picks up where Episode 14 left off, with Bobby (Krause), Hen (Aisha Hinds), and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) under lockdown in the lab, and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) quarantined after being exposed to a super strain of CCHF (Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever). On the outside, Buck (Oliver Stark), Athena (Angela Bassett), and Karen (Tracie Thoms) track down the scientist responsible, and the woman brings the antiviral to the lab while Buck and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) distract the FBI and military. But once the 118 has been evacuated, Bobby locks himself in the lab, revealing that his air supply line tore during the explosion and he, too, was exposed. There’s no antiviral left. “I love you, kid,” he tells Buck before sending him away so he can have time with his wife for a very emotional, heartbreaking goodbye.
“I’m sorry, this isn’t how I wanted to leave you,” Bobby tells Athena. “I’m not choosing to leave you. I chose to save my team because it was the right thing to do. It was never because I wanted to go. I don’t want to go. If I could choose, I would stay with you always.” While they want more time, they don’t have any, and, he adds, “Mine was always borrowed. L.A. was supposed to be my penance, not my home. Then you said yes to a dinner invitation, and I started to live again.” As he coughs up blood, he tells Athena, “I love you, baby, I love you,” then tells her to go because she can’t be there for the next part. But she’s not going anywhere: “I’m here, for all the parts that we have left.” They put their hands up against the glass, then Bobby turns, walks away, kneels in prayer … and the episode ends with everyone crying, alone, and a body bag being carried out, and the last shot is Bobby’s helmet.
Below, showrunner Tim Minear explains that utterly gut-wrenching ending, teases how everyone will be grieving, and more.
Why kill off Bobby? Did Peter want to leave? And why did you do it in this way?
Tim Minear: No, it was a creative decision. Nobody wanted Peter to leave, most of all me, but I just felt like we’re going into Season 9 and it would’ve been comfortable to keep everything status quo and happy happy. But it’s a first responder show, and I put these people in life and death situations, except you could probably look at it and say I just put them in life situations because no one ever dies. So it just felt like it was time.

Disney / Christopher Willard
And look, I had considered other possible deaths, but when I was breaking this story and saw that this could be a truly epic goodbye for a character, I just figured it should be the character who’s going to affect every character’s story on the show. And that’s Bobby, and Bobby’s character. It made a certain amount of sense for the arc of his character and that he came here for redemption and that he came here with a death wish, really. And then his whole story is about how he no longer has a death wish. He never feels completely worthy of the happiness that he’s received, but when he makes that sacrifice, he doesn’t want to go, but he achieves the culmination of everything that has been driving that character for eight seasons. So it wasn’t a hard creative choice to make. It was a very hard creative choice to make, if that makes sense.
What can you share about the conversations you had with Peter?
I let him know before I let anyone else know. So he and I knew together for about a month before I told any of the other cast. He understood why I was doing this creatively. Peter Krause was sort of an unfortunate casualty of Bobby’s death because everyone loves working with Peter. He loves working on the show. So it was a really hard personal sacrifice that we’re all kind of making. But he is a pro, and he completely understands why the show would benefit from something like this. And I told him, I said, “Look, I know this is the right decision, because as soon as it started to happen in my head, the whole world of the show felt more real to me. These people felt more real to me.”
And then shockingly, I would say, having done this for many years and having killed off a lot of characters — on Angel, I was known as the Tim Reaper, I just kill the beloved characters all the time, and Peter’s died on other shows — but this time I think we all just felt like we were losing a real person, someone that we loved. And so everyone had deep, deep feelings about this and still do. I mean, it’s still pretty fresh, but Peter’s great. We talk all the time, and I can’t wait to do something else with him. I just think he’s one of a kind.
Peter’s performance in this episode was one of his best on the show. What did you see in him in that final scene?
What I saw in him was a combination of Bobby and Peter. Some of that’s Peter. Some of that is Peter maybe even talking to me. I was there for that. And it was tricky how we were going to approach this because just based on what that virus was and what it does, the thing could have turned into a ghoulish, body horror, horror movie, which is not what we wanted. You have to understand what’s happening, but we also just didn’t want it to be a particularly ugly death, which is what this would be.
And it was Peter’s idea to turn away from Athena and go to that table and kind of get into a prayerful posture. That was Peter. That was all Peter. So I just thought that was a really lovely choice on his part. And it just kept things kind of elliptical and kind of non-linear because what you’re really watching in those last whatever, two minutes, probably would’ve taken place over some hours.
And then the other thing that I really loved about it and hate about it at the same time is that because of the story I had been telling for those two episodes, the characters couldn’t be together. They’re all isolated. They’re all in a plastic bubble or in a tent or Buck’s on the other side of a thing and breaking down, and Tommy’s watching him from a monitor. No one is there to comfort anyone.
And then I just really felt it was important to be definitive about it, which is why then I went to the body bag and not just the body. I think I am going out on the security camera point of view. So it’s very cold. It’s very clinical. It’s not warm at all. I got similar reactions when I killed a bird on Lone Star once. I’m like, then Rob Lowe walks in and looks down the bird’s down the bottom of the cage, isn’t that funny? No one thought it was funny. I thought it was great.

Disney / Christopher Willard
What was important to have with Bobby’s moment with Buck and his goodbye with Athena? Because the “I love you, kid,” and then “if I could choose, I would stay with you always” were particularly heartbreaking.
I felt like Buck is, in a way, his surrogate son, or probably more realistically, Bobby is Buck’s surrogate father. So Buck, I think, needed to hear something from Bobby before the end. And Bobby and Athena, I mean, obviously I wanted it to be a scene between them and I didn’t want him to get hit by a bus or have a thing dropped on his head or he expires in a coma or something. It needed to be face-to-face.
Will this be the last time we see Bobby or will Peter to be back? There’s flashbacks, dreams, hallucinations. There’s always a way to bring back a character who has died. So are we going to see him again?
This is not even his last appearance this season.
What can you preview?
That you’re going to see him before the end of the season, that you’re going to see him in some of those ways that you have enumerated. I don’t want to mislead anyone. He’s dead.
How is Athena going to be handling her grief?
At first, not well. In fact, I would say that that would apply to all the characters.
What are we specifically going to see from Athena?
You’re going to see Athena try to achieve a miracle that she didn’t get with Bobby.
Are we going to see Eddie find out on screen?
You will not see him find out on screen, but you will hear what his experience was when he finally opens up to somebody.
Is this bringing Eddie back to L.A. permanently?
I mean, Eddie is going to be coming back for the last couple episodes.
What can you say about Buck, Hen, Chimney, and Eddie grieving and who’s leaning on whom?
Well, they’re all leaning on each other, and yet they’re all kind of fractured at the same time. Finding an equilibrium for that grief, it was very important for me that I had a run of episodes after the event so that the audience could try to get their bearings with the characters to grieve with the characters. So all the stages of grief will be represented in the last three episodes with all the characters.
What can you say about specifically who’s sharing the most significant scenes when it comes to that going forward?
Well, there’s three episodes. They’re all going to get scenes. I would say at the center of it, though, is Chimney, who is feeling particularly … he’s got the survivor’s guilt big time. There’s a moment in there, in the episode tonight, where he gets Bobby to promise to look after Maddie because he just assumes he’s not making it out of here. And you can see even through that goddamn face mask, that is the moment that Bobby makes the decision that if there’s a choice to be made Chimney’s walking out and he’s not.
That’s what I thought.
100%. So when he says, “I promise I will not let anything bad happen to your family,” he already knows what’s coming. So you have Chimney having Bobby make that promise, and he can’t really do the same for Bobby because I’m not sure Athena’s going to be open to a lot of comfort from the man who’s alive because — not that she blames Chimney, but that’s going to figure in a lot to the last three episodes.
Because you talked about what Bobby meant to Buck, who is Buck leaning on more, Maddie or Eddie?
Buck is trying to lean on himself. Because Bobby says to him, “You’re going to be okay and they’re going to need you,” and that’s going to confuse Buck. He’s not going to quite know what to do with that. Everyone’s going to be just a little off their equilibrium in these last three.
So when Buck does open up to someone, who is it going to be?
He’s going to open up to everyone on some level. Yeah, you’ll see. You’ll see, Meredith.
How much is grief going to be part of the show? Because it’s hard to imagine them going back to work even though they have to.
Right. And that’s why I felt like I needed a run of episodes to let that breathe. … Every episode [through the finale] is about this.
Speaking of the finale, if these were your Episodes 14 and 15, what are you doing for that?
Well, we’re going to do a real 9-1-1 emergency finale. I think we have, I don’t want to say fun, but I think we have a fun conceit in Episode 17, kind of a thing we haven’t really done before, which will then lead to a mass casualty event. And even in their grief, they’re first responders, they got to put that aside and work together to save people. So I think what you’ll see in the last three episodes, yes, grief, love, loss, sadness, and rallying and victory.
As painful as it’s going to be, the 118 is going to need a new captain. Are we going to see Hen stepping in as interim again? Bobby does say to Buck that they’re going to need him. Is someone new coming in? How are you handling that?
You’re asking about all questions that will be answered in Season 9.
So you’re giving them time to accept what’s happened.
Yeah, I’m not solving that problem right away for the rest of this season. There is an interim captain there who is not going to be the captain going forward, but the last three episodes are not about who’s in Bobby’s chair. The last three episodes are about that chair is empty.
Was there ever a question of the episode ending on anything but Bobby’s helmet?
Yeah, there was actually. Initially, it was just going to be the body bag.
Oof.
And I know, exactly, the reaction that you’re having is the reaction that I was going for. People did not seem to like that, which is why I knew it was probably right. But when we were editing the episode, we found that shot, and I’m just like, “Put it at the end.”

Well you took the best part of the show away. Thanks for that. Will not be watching anymore

Minear. You make me sick. I'm not watching anymore. You just transferred to ABC and already you killed off my favorite character. It's too soon. This would be like killing Victor Newman on the young abd the restless. You made a big mistake.

So wrong!! I can’t believe they killed Bobby!! He was the soul of the fire house, and it’s so sad that they thought that was a good move… 💔🖤

I have been watching this show since day one and it has always been one of my absolute favorites, but after last nights episode, I am done! Killing Bobby Nash off of the show was one of the WORST “creative” decisions I’ve ever seen. It makes no sense at all! Sounds like to me the show needs a new writer, because this show is ruined now.

Worst episode and worst decision made in the history of the show. We loved and needed Bobby here. Also no one gives a eff Timmy was watching Buck and choice to include him and not include a beloved main character
Eddie who had a unique bond with Bobby is absolutely despicable and an insult to the characters and fans.

I believe you are correct. We are being short changed without Eddie being on screen when he finds out Bobbyb is dead. Just an awful way to treat a character. Feels like they are setting up Ryan Guzman to be the next one to leave the show. No matter, my wife and I are finished watching.

I hate this and I won't be watching tonight or in the future. 911 is about being unreal and silly and escaping the other shoe dropping. I have only been into this show for a few years now, so I guess it's just as easy to walk away after part 1 of the 2 parter.
I went from this to 6 Feet Under and Parenthood just for Krause.
I can't stand JLH, but I stayed because I became such a huge fan of Peter and how his character run the 118.
It was fun while it lasted 911.
I hope Peter never works with Tim again. What a disrespectful and lazy ending.

I love this show!! I'm utterly heartbroken, angry that you killed off Peter Krause's character he was their rock. Absolutely loved him on here i love the entire cast. Theres nobody that could fill his shoes hes irreplaceable.

What an arrogant showrunner. I‘m glad Peter Krause no longer has to work for that man. I still cannot understand why that man killed off the heart of this show. It‘s beyond stupid. Then he left aside the second most beloved character Eddie Diaz for now two episodes. A slap into the actors and his fans face. And to top everything he included the most hated character of this show into the plot Tommy Kinnard. What a SHAME. I have really no words for this. He now showed his true colors. Good luck with Season 9 and your new spinoff. I know for sure i won‘t be watching both

Eddie second favorite? Tommy hated? You’re just talking about what YOU want to see. The heart were Bobby and Athena!

Eddie should have been on the show at end of part one or the start of part two. Just awful treatment and short sided on Tim's part. Or was it the show writer and showrunner Kristin. She was never a fan of Buck and Eddie and was responsible for their lack of screen time in season 5 and 6.

I didn't know a show could piss me off this much...I am devastated and honestly don't think I can watch anymore. Killing Bobby, heart and soul, kills so much of what makes the show unique and worthy. And Tim's answers about Eddie really pissed me off too.

He left Eddie hanging out there with saying that he will be back for the last episodes. That sounds like they plan to get rid of Eddie for season 9 with that coded answer.

I am deeply disappointed that we are losing Bobby (Krause). I wish they had let Maggie be killed by the serial killer. She is my least favorite character and this season’s kidnapping reminded me too much of her kidnapping by crazy ex husband. I’m not sure I can finish the season, or watch next season.

I guessed a death was coming and it wouldn’t be Chimney because that was too obvious. I knew it would be a main character & tried to guess who and how the “surprise” would come during the whole show - a helicopter hard landing, someone getting shot by the FBI, a wreck, etc. But Bobby was the wrong choice for me & viewers going forward. I think this is the end of the show. Numbers will fall drastically.

I understand the decision that the writer made to do that but I believe it's going to kill the show because there are already so many people talking that they aren't going to watch the show anymore because they killed Bobby off. So next season might be the last season if they don't have the ratings because of fans choosing to not watch because a character was killed off.

Bobby was THE most uplifting character. There are so many sad things in the world. Really? Couldn't you spare us? This is a HUGE mistake..one of saddest and worst in TV history. I LOVE EVERYONE on this show, but I won't watch without Peter Krause. 😭💔

I like the other faithful viewers I am done. The whole team needed each other. As someon said kill buck but I don’t agree with that either. Looks like the show is in trouble. I know this is not a “real life “ situation where it does happen. . So sorry you made this decision

I'm very sad about Bobbie, he was my favorite character. Peter Krause is such an amazing actor and one of the main reasons I started watching the show. I hope they manage to find lots of ways to still bring him back in flashbacks etc. I'm shocked they actually killed him off, when i saw rumors online of a scene filmed of his funeral I thought surely it was a dream sequence, he was so important and held all the characters together

I agree with the others. I never expected them to kill off one of the favourite characters. Bobby & Athena were my favourite. They ruined the show. I won't be watching the funeral. Last night's show was bad enough. I don't know if I will watch it next season either.
That was awful!

G
Well, I'm done. After watching all the past seasons - I turned off satellite TV because it got too expensive. Signed up for Disney+ a few months ago and have been streaming 9-1-1 - decided to start from the beginning so I could watch the episodes in order. I've only been able to make it to the middle of Season 4, but I won't go on. Why should I?? You've destroyed my favorite show by killing off my favorite character on the show. Bobby was the most compassionate character on 9-1-1 and cared for all the other characters. I don't wanna see him die, so if I just stop watching, I can tell myself it didn't happen. This scenario that I've read kinda reminds me of when Spock died - but there is no 'finding his body and restoring it to life' like they did on 'The Search for Spock'. So, we lose Bobby Nash - Peter Krause loses a job - and this Minear guy is happy. Well, the fans of 9-1-1 are not happy. You've killed the Captain - you've killed the show!!!
3
-
R
Killing Bobby off was an awful thing to do. The chemistry between Athena and Bobby is half the reason I watch! It was such a bad decision on Tim's part. It was bad enough Eddie left the 118. With Bobby gone, they need to bring Eddie home, not just bring him back for an episode here and there. Are you trying to get the series canceled Tim?
3
-
C
I think the creative director was paid a lot of money to sabotage the show. Someone needs to check his bank account. Otherwise why would anyone purposefully ruin their own top rated show? Think about it. I’m sure, in this climate, there are people with money and influence who didn’t approve of the deeply devoted love that Bobby and Athenia shared. It is very sad and terribly unfortunate that others, who share a love like theirs, will no longer be able to see themselves represented on screen in a top rated show.

I think it was a big mistake killing Bobby (Peter Krause) he is probably the most loved character on this show and you are going to lose a big amount of your fans because of Bobby's death.

Well, I'm thinking--and I could be wrong but--that this could be a fake-out. Like the Dallas "dream" season. Unless Peter Krause is doing what he did in Six Feet Under when he cut and ran too early. I'm in Canada and we often don't get the next episode's promo but I briefly caught the big funeral shot. So here's my (hopeful) theory: It's a fugue state -- the funeral etc. Bobby is still alive but in a fevered state so these are coma/imaginings. Maybe he'll even see his deceased wife and kids so he can finally feel forgiven and move on, once he is cured and 'wakes up'. And he's still alive because (with all the experts in that lab building, including Hen's wife, and the inventor, Moira and the other two lab workers) they could make another antidote using the lab rat's blood. Coz Chimney saved the rat (a weird thing to do unless there's a reason) which had the antibodies from its dose earlier that day! And, don't forget, Bobby has a weird, rare blood type. So that might also factor into things because he didn't look anywhere near as sick as Chim did when he limped away from Athena. We also didn't actually see him die. And we didn't see whose body that was all wrapped in black plastic--which could be because they have to move him somewhere else in the building for safety reasons. And, of course, they'd have to cover him completely because he's contagious. Anyway, hope it's something like that. Because Bobby is the lynchpin of this show! It won't be the same without him.👻

Bobby kept all the goofballs grounded. I cried like a baby. You should have killed the whole 118 when the city was threatened with the attack. Not sure if I will watch anymore.

I don't understand killing off the main character of the show. The whole firehouse leaned on him. This may have just broke you being eliminated on next year's renewal. Dumb move...

The killed off the wrong character! It should have been Maddie with the crazy chick. Way to pull a 180 and kill off not only the most likable character, but the entire show.
RIP 9-1-1.

P
It's crap. That's all I can say. Ruin. It's over.
-
C
I also have been watching 911 since it started. It stinks that they killed off Bobby Nash as he was the glue that held the 118 together. It seems that he was being paid too much money and they killed off his character in order to put the money into the stunts that will be upcoming in Season 9. Boo to those that put money above people and the adoring fans that faithfully watch this show!! Let's get rid of the reality crap shows on TV instead! Of course, once again it boils down to money.
-
R
So damn messed up taking Bobby off the show
-
G
I think whoever decides to take these shows off need to be taken off their self taking six of the shows that I truly watch faithfully off and don’t know why because they from the reviews and everything. They were truly watched. You all put the reality shows on there like farmer wants bride, and you leave them on instead of a series which is stupid I’m old school and I like sitting and enjoying watching a family show. these reality shows are stupid because these people don’t last in marriage and everybody knows that I wish you all would put 911 back on that was a awesome show. Papa‘s house the neighborhood night Court happy place shifting gears and you all take all the comedy and good shows off.
-
O
I did not like that Bobby was killed. He was a main character that everybody liked and now he's gone. I will not watch anymore. How ironic, Minear kills him off to make the show better and now noone wants to watch it.
-
O
I don’t think killing Bobby was a good idea. He’s very popular.
-
P
I hope Bobby’s death is just a dream sequence. I can’t imagine continuing to watch the show without him. Athena & Bobby are a huge part of the reason I watch the show.
-
O
Big mistake killing him off I feel the show is going to loose viewers
-
O
Very very disappointing and sad. Not the brightest thing to do.
-
G
They’ll ruin the show just like Chicago Fire did with the promotion of Chief Bowden
-
L
Yall are awful. And not fans if you stop watching bc of this death. Bobby is amazing. But the story arc is awesome and was a great way to send him off. The dialog was written perfectly emotionally gut wrenching 💔 I'm crying writing this. But Bobby's lines omg. He didn't come to L A to live. He was on a death wish and wanted to be punished for what he done to his wife and kids. This is wonderfully thought out and I'll really miss his character more than anything but this bs talk of not watching now is childish.
-
R
stupid stupid decision to kill off the main and most loved character. They could have killed off Hen or even Buck and still had the dramatic effect without ruining the show. Fire the jerk who is responsible.
-
P
I absolutely hate that Bobby is dead. I am curious to see what Athena does from here.
-
J
Already commented yesterday but I had a thought about Lone Star and I sooo loved Judd's character. I think he could be a very respectable replacement for Bobby as leader of the 118! Just, whatever they do, PLEASE not Rob Lowe! He's been hinting about something else percolating with him and the 911 creators. Oh, and maybe Marjan and Tommy Vega could relocate to LA, too!
-
P
Tim Minear has screwed the pooch folks!! Of all the people you could have killed off it should NOT have been Bobby. I have watched this show from season one episode one until now. Seriously thinking of giving it up. I do want to see how the memorial for Bobby goes though so it better be worth it. As far as season 9 goes, there's no reason to watch it any more since you've killed off the heart and soul of 911. There were so many others you could have chosen to kill off but you have "killed" the entire 911 as far as I am concerned.
-
B
I really didn’t like this ending. He was good for the show and it was too real.
-
P
This show must be coming to an end for good, because killing off Bobby seems anti-climatic.
-
B
This is a beautiful episode. Sad, but beautiful. However, I found two things which didn't make sense and they disturbed my viewing experience: 1) the way Moira took a glance on the water dispenser that gave away the hiding location of the serum. She shouldn't be that stupid. She's a world-class scientist ffs! Athena should be able to deduct the hiding place by herself. It's not that hard. 2) After Athena got the serum, she shouldn't waste time by exchanging glance with Karen, or even walking. She should run! It's the same after she put the lab suit on. She walked at the beginning. She should run!

I get why they did this but I HATE it so much!! I was sobbing at the end, somethingI haven't done with a TV show in a very long time. I truly can't imagine the 118 without Bobby. He was the heart and soul of the team. 🫤😢

I'm sorry, but the unsubtly of you trying four separate times to ask about Buddie is straight up mortifying.

While I’m very sad that Bobby is gone, this leaves room for someone else’s character to grow, all of them actually. Minear is right in saying that IRL, people die in these jobs. I just hope it doesn’t happen again!!
