Saltburn is a dark comedy and psychological thriller that has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. The film was written, directed, and co-produced by Emerald Fennell. Saltburn stars Barry Keoghan as a college student named Oliver in England in the mid-2000s. He finds himself drawn to his classmate, played by Jacob Elordi, and is invited to his family’s large estate for the summer. Not long after, he becomes obsessed, and the film follows themes of overconsumption and obsession.

The film has not only been criticized for its polarizing themes but its shocking scenes including the infamous bathtub scene (I’ll let you Google this one). No matter how you look at it, it has been quite popular and is expected to do well on streaming.

Variety film critic Peter DeBruge wrote in his review of the film, “Confronted with a sea of blandly indistinguishable content, Fennell wants to make an impression, embracing the ‘bizart-house’ strategy (pioneered by boundary-pushing A24 movies) of baiting audiences with something they’ve never seen before, and which they’ll be obliged to discuss with others. It’s all part of the meme-ification of movies, and Fennell seems fairly savvy about loading the film with salty one-liners and visual zingers.”
