Awards season has officially kicked off as the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards celebrated film and television’s biggest stars honoring the top performances of the past year.

Along with bestowing recipients with the coveted Actor statue, the event also made way for plenty of fun, exciting, and occasionally amazing moments. Below, we’re breaking down some of the evening’s most memorable moments.

The “I Am an Actor” Opening

As is tradition, the ceremony opened with various stars sharing anecdotes about their experiences as actors, and this year’s lineup included soundbites from Nicholas Braun, Javier Bardem, and Elle Fanning as well as show openers and Hamilton cast members Leslie Odom Jr., Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs who got a little tongue-tied as they spoke over one another.

After going viral last year for their red carpet and on-screen chemistry in Scenes From a Marriage, friends Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain reunited to present the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The duo chatted about their movie and TV watching habits over the last year, which may or may not have included boxed wine.

Troy Kotsur’s Win for CODA

It was difficult to not feel moved by CODA star Troy Kotsur’s acceptance speech for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. His acknowledgment of his wife and daughter are enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes, but it’s his feeling of acceptance with this win that felt so sweet.

Ted Lasso Cast Celebrates Jason Sudeikis

Although most of the Ted Lasso cast could not attend the ceremony in person, they were all streaming in virtually to listen in for the categories their show earned nominations for. First up was Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, which went to series lead Jason Sudeikis. As the cast went wild, Sudeikis told them to “just freeze, no hugging” until after the speech when they could celebrate. Their excitement was palpable as the actor thanked his chosen family for the experience of working on the show.

Romy & Michele’s SAG Reunion

Following in the footsteps of the evening’s earlier reunion, actresses Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino staged a Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion reunion when they presented Ensemble in a Comedy Series together. Leaning into the theme of their reunion, Mira Sorvino even referred to post-it notes for a portion of the presentation.

Love for Juno Temple

After winning for Ensemble in a Comedy Series, the Ted Lasso team got boisterous over their win, but couldn’t go on without acknowledging Juno Temple who was repping the team in-person at the California-set ceremony. Her overwhelmed reaction was nearly as heartwarming as their Apple TV+ hit.

Squid Game‘s Domination

Squid Game was the night’s big drama winner in acting categories as Lee Jung-Jae and HoYeon Jung took home the awards for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series. Their surprise over beating out talent from heavy-hitting shows like Succession was evident on their shocked faces and earned them sweet applause from their surrounding audience. HoYeon Jung’s acceptance was particularly lively, check it out, above.

Helen Mirren’s Life Achievement Award

Dame Helen Mirren earned the evening’s Life Achievement Award and took time to recognize her fellow actors while doing so. Her moving speech is a must-see moment from the evening.

Scandal‘s Olivia & Fitz Reunite

Among one of the night’s many reunions, former Scandal costars Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn reunited to present the award for Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Brian Cox Steals Succession‘s Acceptance Speech

When Succession won for Ensemble in a Drama Series, the cast deferred to its onscreen patriarch, Brian Cox to lead the speech. He thanked the casting team and his colleagues after showing off his Logan Roy “F**k Off” mask and accidentally letting an expletive slip while he tried getting it off of his face. Eventually, the tone turned more serious as he brought attention to Ukraine and pleaded with his fellow actors to support performers around the world who are being stifled by this ongoing war.

Michael Keaton Makes a Bold Entrance

Winning for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, Michael Keaton was late to the stage after supposedly running to the bathroom. While waiting, presenter Salma Hayek got a little nervous about having improvising, but the actor was quick to save her. The speech got quite emotional and personal when he brought up his own nephew’s failed struggle with drug addiction, which connected him to the role in Dopesick.
