What the El? Superman is Coming to ‘Supergirl’!
Proving once again that she can pull off the impossible, Supergirl has landed the Guest Star of Steel: Superman!
Speaking on behalf of fellow executive producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, Andrew Kreisberg says in a statement just released by Kara Zor-El’s new home planet, The CW, that “Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”
“Make room for my cousin, bitches! “
During her first season on CBS, the Melissa Benoist-led dramedy often referred to Supergirl’s Kryptonian cousin but never really showed him. With this development, we should expect not just a flurry of “Who should be Kal-El?” theories (too bad former Supes Brandon Routh is busy on Legends), but also some hope for the future state of DC Comics-based films and TV.
Up until this announcement, it’s been standard operating procedure that the two entities not share characters; that Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their ilk were reserved for the cinematic universe, while Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow, Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon from Gotham and Grant Gustin’s The Flash (who will be played by Ezra Miller in the Justice League movie) would remain the titans of the TV universe. Perhaps we may see more give-and-take now that DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer is now one of the heads of DC Films.

Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) is already playing her adopted father, so he's out. The pool is very limited unless you take DJ Cotrona from the cancelled Justice League movie. So, it's Tom Welling or another actor.

Had anyone really heard of Welling, Cain or even Chris Reeve when they took on the role?

Why would his character? Superman has never been portrayed on screen in his forties (well, unless you count George Reeves).

What makes you think we wont? They make it clear that this Superman has been at it for a while. They havent declared hisnage, so they can make it whatever age they want. And if they pick Welling they can just say his Superman has aged as much as the actor has. It isnt exactly a huge difference anyway.

Being "at it a while" doesn't mean he's 40.
Btw, have you seen Welling this year? He's been packing on the pounds something rotten.
Personally I don't want or need Welling. He's had his time, and believe me I have nothing against older actors (in fact he and I are the same age). I just think it's time to move on.

I'm saying the pool of 'actors who have already played Superman' is limited. It's really Tom Welling (maybe DJ Cotrona), so they have to pick from one of them or choose a new actor.

Cain isn't the only Superman actor playing another character in that universe now that it's joined Flash/Arrow/Legends. Brandon Routh is playing Ray Palmer (Atom).

Doesn't mean he's not 40 either. Being 40 (and he's actually only 39, just looked it up) doesn't exclude someone from playing Superman . George Reeves was only a little younger than that when he STARTED playing Superman- he was 37. And he played the role well into his 40s.
And no, I haven't seen Welling recently.

There has been buzz about this for a few months now. In an interview for the movie The Choice, Tom Welling said he would reprise his role as Superman/Clark Kent if someone were to ask him. Flash forward to not long after that interview, there was a video on YouTube seeming to confirm that he would in fact be Superman on Supergirl's season 2. As a long time super fan of Smallville, I freaked out! Even after all of this time, it is still my favorite TV show ever

I have hopes that it will be Tom Welling. It wouldn't matter that on Smallville there was a Supergirl. I think fans of both shows are smart enough to not get it confused.

Yup bring in Tom Welling. Brandon Routh is anyway now The Atom in the CW world so that would be wrong. Tom Welling is perfect and i think he would do it.

As long as they keep with the Classic version of Superman and not the recent movie version, I'll be fine with whoever they get.

Given that the makers of the show clearly have a soft spot for the Donner films, I'll say I'm more interested to see this version of Supes than more dark,mopey Snyder stuff.
