British actor Louis Hynes seemed to come virtually out of nowhere to take the part of Klaus Baudelaire in the 2017 Netflix production of "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events." But besides the fact that he only had a single credit to his name before that, his newcomer status was attributable to the simple fact of being a child actor. In 2016 Hynes had his first TV role, playing the part of Young Alaric in the History Channel's docudrama about the fall of Rome, "Barbarians Rising" (2016). Before that, Hynes had done some theater work, but after his part in "Barbarians Rising" it didn't take long for him to be tapped for "A Series of Unfortunate Events." Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, and Joan Cusack in the adult roles, the show was based on the book series of the same name by children's author Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler). It centers on siblings Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, capturing the trials and tribulations the trio encounters in the course of their personal odyssey following the death of their mother and father. The modern-gothic stylings of the books, reproduced in the series, set it apart from other children's fare, offering a young actor like Hynes a unique opportunity to be seen by a broad audience of grown-ups and kids alike, as the audience for the books spanned generations.
